Wings3D-influenced texture mapper ...

#1

Is on the way.

http://www.ggaliens.com/temp/manifold.avi

It’s already a vertex coloring app like Nendo but with some selection tricks from Wings3D. Texture mapping tricks found in ExtremeUV to be added soon.

There should be a lot more in the next month (only been developed for maybe 2-3 weeks so far).

One of the cool things I’m going to add next is a powerful loop finder called “Minimal path” that takes remotely located edges (a hand full) and finds the path of minimal length between these edges. This means poles become less of an obstical to the selection process … etc.

Loops that go around the groins and over the thighs that are not really loops but close enough … these can now be selected w/o hand picking tons of edges. Not there yet … but close.

looks pretty cool, i dont know how useful it would be as wings already has this option i believe. the edge loop selection thing sounds very cool though.

#3

Nope … wings does not have it (yet).

Looks nice. Certainly a welcom addition.

Once you have this nailed, do you think you could revise the interface? Maybe add hotkeys (if they aren’t already there) for navigation, and have a sidebar for all the extra tabs so the ogl window can always be viewed.

Goodluck:thumbsup:

Can you give us any other info such as will it be a personal project i.e. closed source or will this be GPL’ed

It’s open source so far. www.ggaliens.com

It is a personal hobby project. But I’ve been at this hobby for 20 years … so I’m likely to keep tinkering for a while.

Critical tricks will and do already have “HOT KEY” short cuts. That being said … I don’t really want to be involved in a package that NEEDS to be so twitchy fast in terms of user interaction that every single function needs a HOT-KEY. Pan, Zoom, and rotate should be and are pretty fast right now.

I like cool stuff like AutoUV … where the user is out of the loop for the most part. I like considering user interface as an evolving thing. Never over-consider the exact GUI/user interface too far in advance of the functions. Functionality can always be given an adequate user interace in a few iterations (versions/releases).

So … I’m fairly sure it’s going to be HEAVY on new and simple UVMapping as related to vertex color and compositing vertex color with texture.

Should we spin off a new dedicated forum ? I think so … I just don’t want to be premature on my dime … Forums are cheap $$$ but they must be managed. I’m not quite sure if I’m ready for that.
When I come to really like what I have made and am using it myself … I’ll probably make sure I have a dedicated forum. I’m close to becoming a Manifold LAB user. Maybe this coming weekend.

Next functions are going to be very heavy on CPU and trickery. Like program seeking out and “discovering” loops that are not so simple as Wings3D or Nendo Loops. There are billions of kinds of loops. We’ll implement at least 4 - 10. LOL.

Nendo Import

Color Support. Face and Vertex.

Better loop based selections.

Select Region ( R ) works better as does the overall interface.

Nendo Export

I need someone to kick this in the tires and help me make it into a better coloring tool. OwenR has been helping so far.
Probablly needs Java 1.4.2 and Win32 for now. Porting should be trival and doable by the user (no programming per se).
