Wings3D for Pocket PC?

#1

How cool would it be if Wings3D could be developed for the Pocket PC? Then we can model on the move.
Any chance Bjorn??

i remember seeing blender for the pocket pc

Hey guys does wings run nice on a crappy ibook or similar laptop?
I am thinking about getting one with the sole purpose of using wings on the go.

define crappy lol. my pc is so old its probabbly older then most of you.
p166 80megs ram 8meg ati rage card and yes it runs wings it slows down the bigger the model gets but still can do quite abit with it. I will be getting a newer system soon.
I see people all the time say there computer sux its to slow etc and there usually 100 times faster then mine. after I get my new system I might be able to sell my old one at a antique shop for big bucks as a door stop or something lol.

depending on your “crappy ibook” budget you might check this out, HECK of a deal:

yeah i was thinking that.

I wonder if i can sell the electric image back after the deal. I really dont need it.

I would say having a laptop that has some kind of hardware OpenGL acceleration and at the very least 128 MB of RAM should fit the bill. If there is no hardware acceleration you’ll need a beefier processor and probably more than 128 MB ram minimum…

As for PocketPC… I don’t know how possible that would be since they tend to be low on the memory front which erlang needs. Maybe there is a way to get erlang to be ultra aggressive on it’s Garbarge Collection…but that in turn would slow down the processor… Therefore…I would say currently all signs point to no. (with the caveat that I’m not super knowledgable about Erlang. So if bjorn or dgud wants to smack me down, feel free )

Wings3D for Pocket PC? - It’s in my dreams.

#8

Sheep, Wings will run just fine on an ibook. I’m running on an older G3 B&W tower and it’s great. It’ll run better on the ibook.

#9

thats good to know , And the wings file format is the same between mac’s and pc’s right?

Would there be a problem transferring files between mac and pc?

Ali

#10

Absolutely, I frequently shuttle files back and forth between my Mac at home and an NT box I have at work. Just open on either platform and go!

BTW, here’s a link to the ibook’s graphics specs:

Hey ! I just give me a Birthday Gift. A Dell Axim x50v…

This NICE piece of technology, is bundled with a 3D Processor aside from the main cpu ! With 16mb RAM only for Video process. And can handle OpenGL !

The Dell Axim x50v has 624Mhz. I think it's enough speed to run a software like wings ported for this new family of power ppcs ?! I am wrong ?

To complete the specs. That beauty have a VGA touch screen, that shows 640x480 graphics, in 65k colors.

I guess that's specs enough to start to think about a port of Wings or some software for Pocket. Man, this could be VERY cool to modeling on a trip, or on the road, and travelling. :) rsrsrs

I thought about running it on my Zaurus PDA (Linux based)… not sure if it could run on it…

Maybe try “Art of Illusion” if your PocketPC has a JavaVM like the Zaurus does (But I didn’t try that either).

Blender has a PocketPC port? that sounds interesting

#13

bottom line is that erlang would have to be implemented on pocketpc as well as SDL, I dont believe either are. But that would be kind of cool… then again maybe not, without all those gloious keyboard hotkeys…

#14

I think porting to a pocket pc isn’t possible, just starting erlang takes 8 Meg on my windows machine…

#15

Is it possible that you can compile Erlang on your pocket PC? I’d give it a try. If it’s possible, then Wings might be easy enough to cram onto it.

#16

I researched a bit, for my zaurus (again not PocketPC but Linux based), sdl is available, erlang might be compilable on the strongarm cpu, and the new pdaXrom that will be available soon, runs x11windows so you should be able to do that as well.
The Zaurus5500 also has 64mb internal memory (and I have a nice 1GB microdrive for it :stuck_out_tongue: ).
The only thing that might become a problem is the slow CPU, only ~200Mhz :frowning:

Maybe if I go time and work out how to compile this stuff, I will give it a try

#17

Well, I suppose if you can find GCC, you could try compiling Erlang. The Zarus OS has GCC, right?
