Wings "zoom"?

#1

Hi everyone,

I’m a brand-newbie (just down loaded Wings3D today) trying the table tut…and so far so good (got buried with Blender tuts…groan)!

I was wondering how to zoom in on some parts so I can select them accurately…I’m on step 34 out of 38!

Looked here and in the manual but no joy yet! any help would be great, thanks.

I’ve never done that tutorial but if you want to ‘Aim’ the camera just Select one or many elements on the mesh and hit ‘A’.

This will frame the selected area and rotate the camera around it’s center point.

This is much useful for sometimes the field of view for the camera(default settings) will be out of range of the elements in question mainly because the camera is aiming elsewhere resulting in a ‘Clipping’ of the polygons that are closest to the border of the screen.It isn’t always a desirable effect though…Aiming corrects it as well as you could change the Field of View values in the edit/camera mode to 0.01

When you’re aimed zoom using either the wheel button(one click starts the camera,another MMB click hold and drag will zoom) or wheelscroll.

Bob - amended tut text to mention this - thx.

Heey Bob C… yea, just select a face/edge/vert and hit “a” and this will aim to your selection as actar… has pointed out

select a couple of faces/edges/verts and hit “a” and it will aim right between the two selected…

and yea, scroll that wheel… to zoom…

I just knew that you would be trying out Wings… :wink:

Thanks for the replies Guys!

I guess because it was my 1st post it had to be checked…(was wondering why this forum was so nice!) and did figure it out.

I did everything else with MMB (wheel) except roll it, duh…Anyway I guess I was more “damaged” by the Blender tut than I thought.

@actarusprocyon:
Thanks for the “Aim” tip too, I did see it but because it wasn’t part of the Tut. I didn’t play with it…yet! Very nice…little steps for little feet…

@puzzledpaul:
Wow Paul…Thanks so much for going thru the trouble of making that Tut…very helpful, encouraging and so well done!! :bowdown:

I got six verts. vs four doing the second “bridge” for the other brace between legs. Is there a way to add or subtract verts? May need to “do over” hehe!

@Ibox:
Yes I’m liking it a lot and understand better why so many people speak so well of Wings3D. Blender has the promise of doing it all but is soooo convoluted with such odd ways (some nice approaches too) but I need a little confidence and modeling success under my belt before I try it again!

Thanks for the help!

<< way to add or subtract verts? >>

For starters -

Add: Select an edge (or edges) and use the Edge | Cut -> n command. This divides the edge up into the relevant number of equal length edges, placing a new vert at the appropriate position(s).

Default hotkeys for this are number keys 2 -> 0 for cutting into 2 -> 10 pieces (more options than using menu).
With advanced menus on, you also get a RMB option to Edge | Cut which lets you slide a single new vert along the selected edge.

Could also select at least 2 edges and use Edge | Connect - this’ll construct a new edge between (new) mid-point verts on the edges.

Subtract: Check out the Vert | Dissolve and Collapse tools.

Info line along the bottom gives details about what’s happening.

Welcome aboard :slight_smile:

Like Paul said keep an eye on that bar on the bottom. it will tell you what you can do at any point… from zooming to any alternate commands for the tool you chose.

Well Finally, Here is my first ever 3D image…done in Wings3D.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Not Much compared to the stuff done here but at least I’m over the “damage” done trying to start learning 3D in Blender…very capable software but a hideous UI (at least for me).

This image had some post production work in PhotoPaint to reduce the jaggies. No render program loaded…haven’t tried to figure that out yet…Little steps for little feet.

Thanks again.

hey, right on Bob C… table looks just fine, and… you finished your first Wings tut… your taking those little steps just fine :smiley:

remember that the whole interface issue with Blender was that they gave it out free then charged you to get a manual to figure it out. the latest version tehy have made major steps in making it user friendly but they still have a few revisions to go befoer they get rid of all teh issues introduced by NAN.

Good looking table.

Thanks Ibox!

Jay…That make alot of sense to me now…I did see the manual for sale and was wondering about it.

If they ever get the UI more friendly it seems like it will be a very popular program as well as being powerful.

I’m really likin’ Wings now though!

bob, your image is gone

i’d like to see it

@Jb5k1

I can see the table pic but sent you a private message with the image info included…Perhaps that will help, I dunno?

I can’t have an Avatar its seems…is it because I’m still a newbie, is 5 posts the magic number?
