Wings & Yafray not playing nicely together!

#1

I’ve been getting back into my wings modelling recently and decided to get my rendering solution all worked out, I like the results that can be achieved with Yafray and since there’s a plugin for it I decided to go with it. Anyway, just reinstalled XP and then installed yafray first, set the PATh variable and tested it, rebooted and installed wings 0.98.20c, the latest stable version. When I come to select render>yafray, wings seems to prepare the scene based upon the settings given i.e. subdision, AA etc but then fails with a ‘rendering error’ message.
Below are the things I have done to try and remedy this, with no avail:-

Yafray
I can run yafray from any commandline, i.e. the PATH variable is working [checked]
yafray works correctly, rendering the test rad.xml file perfectly (cmd:‘yafray rad.xml’) [checked]

Wings
edit>plug-in>preferences>yafray - set the rendering command to both ‘yafray’ (default) and browsed to yafray.exe from the file dialog accessible from there
added light(s) to the scene since yafray needs some kind of illumination
set ‘view>scene lights’ active to preview the lights and in case wings needs this to be active (i.e. tested with this on and as normal)
tried ‘sub-division steps’ of 0 and 1 - both no avail, but winsg does seem to ‘process’ this before passing to yafray & returning rendering error
tried AA on and off - again no avail
file has been saved in case it is required (and re-opened to check no problem with the file)
scene is a simple sphere (in order to keep things simple) and openGL render works fine

I’ve tried to cover all the bases myself and simply can’t think of anything else (or find other reference on the’net) to get this working, therefore I’m asking if anyone has any similar experience or has any advice for what I need to do I would greatly appreciate it! There must be something I’m overlooking but for the life of me I can’t work out what it is

thanks in advance,
mlqds

PS also had the exact same problem with 0.98.21c (the development version) before I re-installed XP (which was for other reasons)

Lets see, the last time i had this problem, i did this ;

Install Yafray 0.0.5 in C:/Yafray

Open Wings, go to plugin preferences for Yafray, then select the yafray.exe And change the dialogs to enable dialogs.

That did it for me.

Make sure your using 0.0.5 of Yafray.

Good luck!

hi Ra,
Thanks a lot dude, I downloaded a 0.0.4 version (couldn’t find the 0.0.5 version), installed it and it works fine :bounce:
pretty speedy too which I was surprised about - quality looks good too, - so now just need to spend some time learning how to make a nice GI lighting rig

just in case you might know, coupla quick questions:-

a) is there any way to have a DOS screen pop-up so I can see how far the render is progressing - kinda blind at the moment!

EDIT - Answered this mysefl by opening my eyes! For anyone else interested look in the Erland Console window!

b) Is there any way to save your lighting rig/setup in wings so that you can load it ‘around’ a model you’ve been working on?

(might have to suggest that last one at the development forums if there isn’t a system for it at present - my idea is that I can create a nice lighting setup and then add it to any model I’m working on at the time and get a lovely GI render!)

Thanks again, your helps is very much appreciated!

Glad it worked! I didnt realise the site removed the 0.0.5.

And about the progress thingy. You know the Erlang window that pops up with Wings? When you hit render, just maximize the window. You can see the progress there.

Good luck.

Set up your lighting rig on a copy of your model, then delete the model and save jus the lighting rig in it’s own .wings file.

Then bring it in with any model using the File menu/Merge… command.
