Wings workflow in other apps?

#1

I was wondering, being something of a 3d newbie, if there was any way to make other programs such as 3d Studio or Maya behave somewhat like Wings.

The way Wings works just seems to make so much more sense that I have a difficult time working with Maya PLE, or 3d Studio on campus.

For example, the one-key switch to a different axis view is something I miss terribly when trying to use other software. If there was a way to do that in Maya, I’d be very happy. Why does Maya make you click on a tiny little dot to select a face? Is there no way to do Wings-like selections? The “Wings way” just seems to be the obvious way to do things, but maybe there’s a reason that other packages do things so much differently.

There are a few things that you may be able to do that with in the various apps, but I am with you… It drives me nuts to jump back and forth between the different workflows and commands. If I could use the wings camera mode and all of my wings hotkeys in XSI I’d never use wings, but that would be a bad thing, no?

There are some things that you can do in Maya to make life easier.

To get rid of that dot and select on the whole face, open the Windows > Setting/Preferences > Preferences… window. Under Settings > Selection set Polygon Selection to Whole Face.

You can bind hotkeys and/or create shelf buttons to do just about anything in Maya (like switch views).

Give MJ PolyTools a try. This will let you select edge rings and loops. As well as other cool poly tools.

BPT Bevel is a great poly bevel.

If you really want to change Maya’s UI check out Xumi’s XTools

Even with all this, I still find box modeling in Wings to be much faster and more intuitive than Maya. But it helps to know how to do it in other apps too. Good luck!

Except for Softimage|Xsi I use the same shortcuts as Wings in every other software that allows me to do it.

The one best thing I haven’t found in any other software, well maybe that mirai has it,which wings3d has is a solid virtual mirror.

What I actually mean is that you never have to worry about unwillingly moving centered part of your symmetry and even better, use it as a modeling tool.

Let’s say you have a Vm on a cube or anything really and that, preferably using the Tweak Mode, move an horizontal edge that’s connected to the virtual mirror’s face,it will always keep the end vertex centered,I use it alot when defining volume.

Same thing when moving a vertex that alongside the Vm.

Also a quick tip, when you edgeloop select the center edges and bevel them, you get a Hole(blue faces),it’s ok,just go in face mode, select them or select all(ctr a) and call the menu and choose .material./Default(or your custom material).
