wings source code

#1

i was wondering, what language is wings written in?? I downloaded the source code and I didn’t see any .cpp files so it must be some weird language that I don’t feel like learning =)

#2

It’s written in Erlang/OTP,if you change your mind you can download it and docs from www.erlang.org

#3

is it object oriented? I’m not even going to mess with it if it isn’t =)

#4

Nope,no OOO there as far as I know…I’m no programmer tho, other than some extremely simple Perl stuff,
so your best bet might be to look around the docs and check’em out.

It’s not OO, thats the whole point of erlang to not be OO
OO is bad
In erlang each object is a real parallell process, message passing is done
via real messages, wings doesn’t use so many processes in erlang.
Erlang can easily handle a couple hundred thousends process, without
performance penelty, try that in java or c++.

OO is not bad. And just because a language is not OO doesnt mean its not worth anything. Just that you need to LEARN when to use OO or not, its all preference.

Umm yeah sure Erlang is fast , you know its an ‘interpreted’ language right? Which means it is not as fast as a compiled program. You also know that when it comes down to it, its all about machine code, C++, Pascal, VisualBasic, they all can have comparative speeds, it all depends on the compiler and how good it spits out an executable file. And also, an executable file is as good as the source file which is as good as the programmer who wrote it. You can have the fastest code in VB, optimized with some assembler routines, written by a very experienced programmer , and the slowest code in C++ written by a super sloppy programmer.

What you should say is that Erlang helps you write programs in a certain style without worrying about some things like that parallelism thing youre talking about, because in C++, you’d have to write your code like that on your own, sorta.

Anyway, Erlang is not soo hard to learn, its just another language. Once you know & understand one, all other languages will be easy to assimilate.

i know and understand html… but erlang is beyond me :stuck_out_tongue:

so HA!
