Wings or Blender?

#3

Nothing speaks against using both…
Model in Wings3d, do the rest in Blender

It seems rather unanimous (even though only two people responded) that I should use wings for modelling blender for the rest. So I’ve made a model in wings using the tutorial in the manual. Now how do I open the file in blender for rendering?

I’m probably not the most qualified to answer but I’ve been lurking for a while now and have found this site has a great suite of plugins to pull in and export almost anything you want for Blender.

I haven’t gotten it to work myself yet, but I haven’t read much on Blender and I didn’t have the correct version of python (shoot for 2.0.1)

Good luck!

The good and easy way is to export from Wings in .obj format, then use this script to import into Blender. You’ll also need a recent version of Python (www.python.org).

Good luck!

Wings3D or Blender?

Both.

There’s no questionning yourself about it because they’re both free…If you don’t like one of them, just uninstal/delete.

I think I installed Blender 4 times before giving it a sufficient go to get used to…

You already made the choice, now you need to understand why

Hans, I used the script you suggested and it worked, thanks! Now all I need to do is learn how to use blender… I can’t even move the camera into the correct place yet :stuck_out_tongue:

Select the camera (or whatever you want to move) with a right-click, press G on your keyboard and move your mouse around. When you are happy with the new position press Enter. If you want to cancel the movement just press Esc.

Some extremly basic hotkeys:

G -> Grab / move
R -> Rotate
S -> Scale

Rotating your views: Click and drag with your mouse middle-button (usually the wheel).
Zooming your views: + and - on the numercial side of your keyboard.

Just for the fun of it, Some time ago there used to be a iPac version of Blender (iPac was a hand-held computer by Compaq) so all the above actions can be performed by mouse gestures (without using hot-keys becouse iPacs doesn’t have keyboards). Like this: After the object you want to move/rotate/scale is selected …

Grab: Left-Click and quickly drag to a side.
Rotate: Left-Click and quickly do a circular dragging motion with around the object with the mouse.
Scale: Left-Click, hold and quickly draw a S with your mouse (this one takes a lot of practice  )

Hi all,

Num. pad “0” for the camera veiw!,

you can also select any object ,such as alamp and press Ctrl + num. pad “0” for the veiw from that object.

and Alt + num.pad"0" to get back to the last selected camera

if your having trouble getting started,
download thie basic training file from here. :

Hey all! Out of curiousity, Blender is the first 3D app I’ve ever used. I’ve only just started learning modelling, but have no basis for comparison. Why do you say that the other modellers are better?

#12

I’ve just started using Wings, but I’ve also used GMax and dabbled in Blender a bit. I think Wings is better because it is so easy to use, and therefore speeds up workflow. Since Wings only models, the interface isn’t cluttered with all that other stuff that Blender has. Also, Wings’ menus are reached by right clicking, and instead of having a bunch of disabled menu options filling the screen, it only presents you with the things you need. You’d need to try it out to truly understand what I mean.

NOT ANYMORE!!! Have you checked the new interface on Blender 2.30? You’ll be very pleased.

look, wings and blender are too very different tools.
wings is just a dedicated modeler, but it is the best
blender is a complet 3d suite - you can model, render, animate and postprocess using it …

so what is the logical way to use the tools, when you know that you can export your wings models to blender?

H@dj, the shortcut to change camera is Control 0 (zero) , after that changing, just 0 (zero) will do.

Alexandre Rangel

<edit> note that´s the NUMPAD 0 (zero).

I use both blender and wings… I find that blender is a good program, but it can be alittle complicated. If you want a good program that does it all, check out Art of Illusion at http://www.artofillusion.org It too is free, and it works great…

#17

Both are wonderful, and using them together is really clever.

I am a Blender newbie, starting now, but have used many 3d packages during many years.

#18

I’m a blender user for 4 years, i really happy now because i can make a lot of things and i don’t need help for a keybord hotkeys (too much in blender ;))

So Wings seem to be a good soft, but when you use a Software soo hard like blender you don’t want to change.

;))

it is indeed hard to give up an interface and a workflow for something completely different.

I suggest you use both DaemonMagus [as others suggested].

#20

Yes, you should use both together.

Now, there are a few tools that have been hacked into blender:
band cut (insertion of an edge loop), band selection, knife.
They work quite well!

The renderer has been improved with raytracing, reflection, refraction, translucency (<<excellent) and it can be used together with the radiosity solver. You can mix Toon and raytracing, or any other Shader with it… it’s hybrid (per lamp, per material)…

So you can model with wings, animate and render in blender! great! and if you want to fix something in your model once it’s in blender, the tools are there: use them!

Ciao!
