Wings modeling for a lightwave user..

#1

Hi all,

I just started to get back into modeling and while lightwave is my usual package i have wanted to try out wings for a secondary package… If any of you have ever used lightwave i wanted to know if there was anything like the symmetry tool for wings… If there is i don’t know how to set it up… i wanted to start modeling a human head and i think i’m getting the grasp of wings, but i can’t figure out how to set up symmetry…

OK, I am taking that you are refering to the virtual mirror?

Just select the center loop by selecting any center vertical edge and hitting “L” , then right click and do a loopcut, you will see that one side is now red, as a seperate object, just hit delete, you now have a half of what you started with, now hit “F” to go into face mode, click the inside face where the other half used to be, then go up into the top menu’s and choose Tools- Virtual Mirror-Create and you should be good to go

You would be better to make these functions hotkeyable. When you mouse over the commands in the menu’s and the selection is showing blue in the menu’s, without clicking them just hit “inset” then your prefered hotkey and whoila, it is now your preference.

have fun

Hey thanks… That is really helpful…One last question if you don’t mind… How do you set say the back face or point to an axis?? I know in lightwave you can select some point and hit CTRL+V and set the axis for those point, or faces…

you can use flatten to do that. I don’t think wings has numeric control yet.

Flatten is really good and easy to use just select a face and right click, choose flatten and an axis. It’s also ery useful for say you have an n-gon like a five edged face, you can use the flatten normal to make it planar thus with better renderability.Did Lightwave have 5 side faces?Anyways you’ll find them most useful when modeling.

Also,You can use numeric inputs but it won’t be vs World coordinates.

Whenver you use move, scale or much any tool, push Tab to enter the number of units to apply the transformation.

Damn… I’m loving this modeler already… I’m catching onto it pretty quick… I’m gonna give this about a week or so to get used to doing things in here and then i will post some results… thanks you guys have been really helpful…

Hey StephanD,

I downloaded your tutorial video… How did you model both sides of the body at the same time?? this is what i’m wanting to do… Model on side and have the same operation happen to the other side…This is very similiar to the way i model in lightwave… Please let me know how this is accomplished in wings… If i missed something i apologize…

delete one half of the model and then virtual mirror that one big poly on the flat face. what’s cool about this over LW’s symmetry is you can virtual mirror on ANY poly.

#9

Thanks for that info… Really loving this app…

after you play around for a while… go back to LW and work. Using Wings has seriously improved how I work in LW too. They definitely compliment each other well.
