wings is freakin awesome

#1

I just seriously gave wings a try after using max for a while and it is freakishly awesome. I never expected something like this from a freeware app. The only thing I miss from max is a poly cut tool.

whatsa hotkey for the tweak mode and why is there no tweak mode in any other app???

   at wings

…ok I also miss the weld target button the whole collapse/dissolve thing is a bit confusing

-The only thing I miss from max is a poly cut tool.

You can use the Slide cut function. It’s a bit slower than a MaxCut but it does it as much if not more precisely.

Select one edge
Invoke the Right click menu
RIGHT Click on Cut instead of LMB
Drag the mouse to move the vertex on the edge
LMB to confirm

Next step after cutting them is to select them and hit C to connect.

-whatsa hotkey for the tweak mode

There is no default key.

You can define one easily by opening the Tools menu, hover on Tweak and hit ‘insert’ on your keyboard, the Next key you press will be assigned as a hotkey for this function it goes on for the rest.

-why is there no tweak mode in any other app???

Xsi has a point edit mode which is similar,Lightwave also has one I believe.

thanks you really helped me out how about the welding thing?

Well, I use Wings for a while back, but I always learn something new. Maybe because I use hotkeys & miss some newly added sutff.

<< Select one edge
Invoke the Right click menu >>

If you enable Temp Selections (Edit -> Adv. Prefs -> Use highlight as a temp. seln) you don’t have to actually ‘select’ the edge - just highlight it.

Also, if doing several RMB cut ops in a sequence:

Do first edge / op
Highlight next edge
press D (repeat last op)
drag and accept … etc etc

(currently an issue re displaying verts - bj aware)

k - various bits of info here, if interested

thanks for the site i’m gona check it out.
is there a way to work with a smoothed proxy surface in wings?
i am talkin about having a (virtual mirrored?) smoothed mesh
next to the low res “work” mesh. (need more beer before explaining stuff i dont understand)
damnit if only i had typed iteration somewhere it would make more sense.

RIGHT Click on Cut instead of LMB
Drag the mouse to move the vertex on the edge
LMB to confirm

when i go to cut on the right click menu i get another small menu with different cut numbers ? so when i right click on cut the menus stays there, so i select 2 2 but then which button on the mouse do i hold to drag ?

#9

It’s simpler than that.

Use the Advanced menu, they’re actually easier to use.

Right over Selected or Highlighted edge(Adv.option use Highlight as temp selection)

Do NOT use the multiple Cuts(2,3,4) function

if you need to slide it,only one Vertex at a time’s supported yet

so you just Right click directly on the Cut function,

do not hold any Mouse button and move it,

Left Click to terminate at the current position…

Lightwave has a tweak like feature: the Drag tool - with it you can freely move points without first selecting.

Yeah the Tweak Mode does just that but has also a magnet option.

I myself have had problems with wings…still trying to figure it all out…but since we’re all in here…I’ll just ask.

a) is there anything like transform handles in wings? I was using wings to try and follow the Joan of Arc tutorial, I try to make a cube, scale it down [scale uniform] and then move it [move>y, and then move>x.] I really wish it could be a bit simpler then that. If there were handles, I could just drag it down, and then on x. Any tricks or tips on that?

b) I am trying to get into ortho views. This is quite apparent when I try to model with references. I have half of the object on one side, half of it on the other side of the reference image. Sometimes, the vertices from both side do not get selected and I have to manually adjust it…what’s up with that? any tricks around it?

c) How exactly do you program short-cut keys?

I figure its better to be a fool for 2 minutes and ask these questions then be a fool forever.

No there isn’t. But you can use tweak
mode to deform the mesh quickly.

Press INSERT key on the highlighted
item in the right-click menu.

e.g. highlight move > x ; press INSERT ; press ALT + X
now ALT + X is binded to the move along x command

That’s the beauty(well almost the only one) of orthographic view.

No matter how far you put the image plane from the model it will be aligned headon.

Try it,select the Side reference plane and move it on the X axis until it reaches the end of the Ground Plane.

Set the view in Orthographic X axis and tadaa, you can select both sides of the model…Same goes for front and back pictures.

thanks a lot…definately makes my workflow a lot better.
