Wings is a workout

#1

ok, i’m just getting into wings. i keep going back and forth on whether it is worth it or not. It is taking me forever to get used to this workflow. i just modeled a torso and i feel like my brain just ran the mile. i am begining to warm up to her though.

I don’t think this thread requires any replies, but just wanted to let the other newbs they are not alone :buttrock:

yeah you will feel the burn with this work flow. give yourself a week then think about it. It took a week for my brain to wrap around this kind of work flow, and within 3 months there was little I couldn’t build in it.

Are you making use of hotkeys andadvanced menu’s, temp selection ec… ? These alone will drastically improve the workflow

Keep at er, you will soon be rock’n

i still havent messed around with the adv menus and i’m not sure what temp selection does or how useful it is. but i have been using hotkeys. wings has taught me a lot about 3d space. using a manipulators all my life i have never learned to notice the axis in which i move. now its a must to know where you are in 3d space. wow, i see the potential in the little app tho, really nice.

Personally, I can no longer work with manipulators at all [atleast when modelling]

well, the advanced menu’s open up a variety of options, as you will soon find out once you explore some more (found in Edit Preferences ) , and the temp highlight selections allow for one less click with each op… which works hand in hand when your ops are bound to a hotkey setup.

Like say for instance you have bound extrude to a particular hotkey, now with temp highlight selection enabled when you mouse over the area v/e/f you wish to select, instead of having to click to select before doing the op, you would simply hit your extrude key when mouseover highlit… thus saving the extra click to select for each op… now if only they would enable doing multiple ops without having to click out first, then this workflow would double in speed… haha, sorry, I digress…

anyway, glad to see you having some fun and learning this little gem of an app… good on you  and yes, axis is everthing once ya think about it, and since you have discovered such, I say right on

have fun

are u using just the default hot keys or did u set up ur custom? it’s really tedious to work in wings if u don’t have translate, rotate, and scale on hotkeys. and end up with a broken rmb.
also try out smart highlight in the preferences menu. instead of highlighting only verts, or only edges, or only faces, it will highlight any of the three. once u’ve selected one, it will switch to the selected sub object’s mode.

By using tweak, and vector move/scale/rotate i rarely have to think x/y/z anymore.
