Wings has a wiki

#1

Wings has a wiki that the entire Wings community can contribute to.
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wings_3D
Instead of scattering tutorials and articles all over the web we now have a central location to refer to for all aspects of learning and using Wings. The important point is even if you cant commit to an article on a large subject, you can just contribute a little which can later be added on to and modified by others.

Check out the wiki the Blender people have for their app for some ideas.

That’s fantastic. When did this happen? I remember a very recent thread on the official wings3D forum suggesting this.

So I see there already was one. Well, that’s good news.

Edit:
Although it’s not a compleate wiki as I would like to see it.
Wings 3D is just a subtopic off of en.wikibooks.

a wings3d.com/wiki/ would be nice IMHO. But I might just be missing something at the wikibooks page.

I just want to mention that work is progressing well on the wiki. The main project going on is to convert the official manual from .pdf to a text format so it can be posted on the wiki (the author of the official manual lost the original material) so that the manual can become an ongoing community supported project. If anyone would like to help out, here is some software that converts .pdf files:
www.etrusoft.com/pdf-to-word-html/pdf-to-text.htm

And someone already got good quality screen grabs of the graphics in the manual:
www.forrestwalter.com/tem…aphics.zip

People are also starting to load some very good tutorials onto the wiki, as you can see for yourself:

<< The main project going on is to convert the official manual … >>

Why should this be a ‘main’ project when Jon has provided the UM in Open Office (and rtf) format?

As regards the images - from what I remember of the pix, I’d be very surprised if there’s no room to improve same - from a technical / content / relevance pov - in view of some of the changes that’ve taken place since…

I didnt bother to open the file Jon provided because he said it was not the latest version, so I figured it would be less work just to use material from the most up to date pdf. So for anyone who would like to download the material Jon has, you can get it here:

Well, it’s certainly going to be interesting to see what needs modifying - having just had a quick look the the screen grabs at fw.com - I’d say about 60% need changing at least - for one or more reasons …

… assuming someone somewhere wants to the job ‘properly’

Takayuki from the official Wings forum has just converted all the .pdf manual to text and has stuck it all in the glossary.
en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Win…l/Glossary
So if anyone would like to do the page layout for the manual on the wiki, dig in.

And as I mentioned before, Walter Forest has got screenshots of all the images
www.forrestwalter.com/tem…aphics.zip

Once we have the manual completely loaded up, it is time to start bringing it up to date (like with magnets) or modifying any part that needs improving.

Weve got a “Quick Start Guide For Beginners” at the main tutorial page of the wiki.
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Wings_3D:_Tutorials
Ive written a rather crappy article for the introduction of this guide (please feel free to change it and improve it).

Its so easy to start a new article, let me tell you how its done. You just clic “edit” at the upper right corner of where you want to add stuff. And then just add two brackets to each side of the heading you want you want to make into a link.
[[how to create a cube]]
And then click the save button at the bottom of the page. Now you can just click on the link and it will automatically create a new page in which you can start writing your article.

Here is the editing help page, very simple stuff, a quick look over will get you up to speed on the formatting.
