wings-> Cinema4d SubD issues

#1

Hi
I have a model I created in wings.
I sent it to c4d for a test render. Then I noticed that the subd 'd model in c4d has some hard edges compared to the one in Wings.
what do you do to ensure your models look the same in wings.
Pleaase take a look at the pix here at this link.

Thanks

phong tag in 8 up
or smoothing in older version might help ya?

#3

btw was that mesh in a hypernurb in c4d?

#4

I’m not sure, but I think wings use Catmull-Clark subdivision, and cinema uses Doo-Sabin. C-C makes everything rounder (example: smoothed cube whith C-C will be almost spherical, while by D-S it’ll be just rounded, but not spherical)…

if ya wanna know more about doo-sabin and catmull-clark

(don’t actually know which method c4d uses…maybe the guys on the cinema forum can tell ya…so presume azazel is right…but to get around you problem play about with phong/smoothing tag first…then hypernurb setting…and if you got v 8 up then there is always weighting…can also play about with moving edge and subdivision of problem area)

Thanks guys.
I will look into the subD metnods and see if that might help me. Thanks for the link.
Trying to fix the problem areas individually wont work because even though I show just the face in the picture, I have the same problem in other areas of the model.
I tied the playing with the phong tag , that didnt help either.
I guess , i will also post this on the cinema forum.

Did you try deleting the phong tag?

#8

I did not delete the phong tag.
You have to have a phong tag to have smothness in cinema.
What I found though is that when I did a render with wings opengl (subdivisions =2) the outcome was a little closer to the one in cinema.
So the next question is how can I set this subdivision to 2 in the workspace in wings (when you use shift+tab)…maybe this would slow wings down?.
It seems the current subdivision level is 0 or 1.
That way I can see the extent of creasing/hardness as cinema would interpret it.
Hope this makes sense.

To set the subdiv level in cinema to the same as in wings(1),
you can just doubleclick the hypernurb icon,
and there are two settings…editor and render subdivisions.
(If you’re in R8 or later, change the values in the AM)
If you set the editor level to 1 it will look more like the model in Wings.
Oh,and both C4D and Wings use Catmull-Clark.
Just try smoothing a cube once in wings,
and then select all the faces of a polycube in C4D and select subdivide,
(v or righclick to bring up the menu ),
choose a level of one and tick the hypernurbs subdivision box.
Results should be identical.

dAftie,
I actually want it the other way round. Cos I am rendering in Cinema so a subD level of 1 wont do for a final render.
I want to set the subD level of wings to 2 when I hit shift+tab so I can see what I will get at render time in Cinema.
. Is this possible, or is this only possible when you go to opengl render(in wings).
The opengl render in wings is slow and would not be practical for workflow. i hit the shift tab often to see how my subdivided object looks.
Thanks

#11

Nah,for now there’s no way of setting the subdivision level in wings.
What I tend to do is just smooth once and then hit shift-tab,
and then just undo the smooth after.

#12

Thanks dAfTiE. I will try that.

#13

You right dAfTiE, it’s Catmull-Clark in both. My mistake
