Well, I am back from my retirement... I have more time for doing Wings now and some of my inspiration is back too...
But as usual, no promises about when a specific feature will appear and how much I will actually work on Wings in the future…
The main new thing in this release is support for other languages than English. Riccardo Venier started the whole thing by sending us an Italian translation. Because it now was possible, Dan and I decided to do a Swedish translation. For one thing, it would make it easier for our children to use Wings; for another, doing a translation would help us testing out the mechanism for translating.
Enjoy!

The pre-built Mac OS X release now only works on Panther (Mac OS 10.3
or higher), not on Jaguar. It should still be possible to build
everything from source on Jaguar (including Erlang/OTP) and get it work,
but if you do you are on your own; I no longer have access to a Jaguar
system so I can’t help you if you get any problems. -
Wings now uses the latest Erlang OTP release (R10B-1a) and the
latest ESDL (esdl-0.94.0615). -
The edge and vertex Intersect plug-in by elrond79 is
now included in Wings. -
Paul M (elrond79) improved the 3DS importer so that all triangles are converted
to polygons (unless doing so would create holes or create isolated vertices).
Work flow:
-
The commands in the end of the Body menu are now more context-sensitive
to more clearly show the commands that can be used at any given moment.
(Thanks to wasamonkey.) -
Lights can now only be deleted or duplicated in Body mode.
Also, the if there are objects selected as well as lights, the
Duplicate command will now duplicate them as well. -
Pop-up menus in advanced menu mode only: Commands that have an option box
icon to the right (such as Cylinder) can now be invoked with RMB to open
the open dialog. (The old way, clicking on the small icon, will still
work.) (Suggested by wasamonkey.)
Language support:
-
New Italian and Swedish language support. Use the new “Language”
preference in the “User Interface” section of Edit|Preferences.
So far, only the core Wings user interface has been translated;
all plug-ins are still in English only. -
Riccardo Venier and Dan G implemented the mechanism for having
different languages. -
Italian translation by Riccardo Venier. Many thanks.
-
Swedish translation by Dan and me.
Bug fixes:
-
When importing 3DS or OBJ files, textures will be read from the
same directory as the file itself. (Problem reported by Mark Whittemore,
and probably by many others.) -
Fixed material to vertex conversion if some uv-coords where missing.
(By Dan.) -
AutoUV: Workaround for broken OpenGL implementatiions that don’t tell
their maximum texture sizes. (By Dan.) -
AutoUV: Correction of vertex unfold. (By Dan; thanks to Wasamonkey,
pauljs75, and endseason). -
AutoUV: Flatten command corrected. (By Dan.)
For developers:
-
NSIS 2.0 or higher (not the 2.0 beta) must now be used to build an
installer on Windows. -
New function wings_materials:add_materials/3. It also
takes a base directory to use when loading any textures. -
Added the ‘dir’ field in the #e3d_file{} record.
(Import/export plug-ins will have to be re-compiled.) -
The BUILD.unix and BUILD.win32 text files in the source release
have been updated with the new requirements for needed software.
(Thanks to elrond79 for reporting an error in
“How to do a minimal build” BUILD.win32.)
