Who is your CGTalk Mentor?

#1

I have been an active lurker :argh: on CGTalk for a few years now-and always find myself reading and re-reading certain peoples posts. My favorite member is most definately JackDeth, with his ‘no bullshit, tell it as it is’ attitude.
My brother and I started up our own company earlier this year, and have some of JD’s quotes printed up and stuck on the walls in our rather small, extremely hot, studio. Heres some favorites:

"Frustration is a test that seperates the strong from the weak."

Ownership comes with a mountain or respondsibility that most people (even senior supervisiors) can’t ever understand. And its not always fun. Be ready for sleepless nights from never ending pressure, get ready for having people hate you no matter what descision you make, and brace yourself for dealing with people who betray you and try to **** you at every turn.
…but I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.

“If you take all the risk, then you get to make all the calls, so that you alone can benifit from all the rewards.”

"I’ve always like the saying “if partners are so good, then why doesn’t God have one?”

“a company without focus or purpose is a company that will be lost. It can take YEARS of aiming a company down a certain path before it ever pays off. And if you don’t have a gameplan, then you might as well give up now.”

“Some people are just so narrowed minded, and they think they know everything when in fact they have no clue at all for what it takes to run a company with all the debt hanging over your head like a 10 ton stack of bricks.”

Don’t fall in love with your work. It’s not your art, but the art of the person that is paying you.

To not push, is to fail.

All of the good reviews of bad work, takes away from the same good reviews of good work.

What stops people is thier lack of passion. Everyone talks a big game, but few will put thier money and lifestyle where thier mouth is. It’s taken me over 15 years to get to the point of doing our first feature, and it comes as a result of lots of blood, sweat, and tears.

Excuses are only for the weak and short-sighted.

ON OFFICE COOLING I just put two car-sized AC’s in the machine room… 30 tonnes goes a long way.

Q) Given that you’re an extremely driven individual, I wonder what your thoughts are on the balance between personal life and a career.
JD) There is no balance for me. I went to Paris to relax and I was bored after 5 hours. I need to work.

“here are no rewards if you take no risks”

“There are too many companys and people fighting for a finite amount of work and money, so it all comes down to who wants it the most.”

“If you get lazy, or you think too highly of yourself, then you are asking for trouble. We aim at 3 targets; this week, two months from now, and nine months from now. As long as you keep hitting those targets then the cash flow stays stable.”

“The trick is knowing that you aren’t always the smartest person, and even dumb people can have great ideas. You also need to know that sometimes you have to lose a battle to win a war.”

“With that said, these crazy schedules projects are a niche market that I enjoy. Its fun and scary all at once, and if you can pull it of you become a hero.”

[b]" Maybe people should realize that this is a lifestyle, not just a job."

Do you guys have any inspirational one-liners from other CGTalk members? Any quotes that you have read that would make killer motivational posters? POST EM! :)

I’ve been helped by so many CGTalkers that I can’t credit them all.

In the last year or so I’ve tried my hand at compositing and while I was helped by lots of regulars I have to say that beaker is a legend! I’ve read through so many of his posts and have learnt loads from them. It’s obvious to someone as inexperienced as me that he really knows his stuff. He seems to have used every bit of compositing software going. Kudos!

I still find it amazing that you can get quality, free guidence from pros on sites like this.

Yeah! I remember some of those JackDeth phrases! They are really inspiring. Some of his Ideas I have figured out on my own…but I guess I lack the skills to express them like he does!

#4

I’m speachless.

#5

And here I was hoping for something along the lines of “GET BACK TO WORK CHRIS-Theres money to be made!”

Neil Blevins is also an amazing member…even to the point where he as actually e-mailed me critique about my work.

This is actually not a one-line lecture, but just kinda one-line inspiration… does that count?

It’s from Fausto De Martini the time he hes Mariner.

In the first post he wrights: " Hi! I’m doing this mariner to try get a job on Blizzard Entertainment… I know thats will not be easy, but I have a lot of hope" and later in the same thread he wrights “The cool news is: I got the job at Blizzard!!!”

That is the most inspiring thing I’ve read on cg talk…

If I recall it was actually THROUGH cgtalk he got the gig – Tito knew someone who knew someone I think

For my mentor - the collective force of CGTalk is my mentor. I can’t possibly narrow it down to one particular person.

#10

Heh, well I am new here on the forums though not new on the site, and so far the person that has helped me everytime has been monica-taddei  So yea thanks for all the help so far

#11

Same here Colin, same here.

#12

Time to write a book ;).

Really good and true quotes, but Jackdeth (with all respect) isn’t my hero. That place is reserved for Keith Richards (since I was 5) - he only posted on cgtalk once. Kind of the same philosophy, tho

“Why create something from scratch when it can be copied in half the time?”
-Dale Williams

A mentor of mine* and 75% of Hollywood.

(*)-O.k., maybe not mine.

I have to say eek (Charles Looker) Vyntax (Stu Jones) and Slurry have been a MASSIVE help to me, hehe they must get sick of me nagging them somtimes but they’ve given me so much advice on how to improve my work and the industry. this is a tough carear to get into and having pro’s to help you is a HUGE help.

#16

ah shucks, thanks Chris.

In this industry you have to be humble and be learning all the time, for that these are my long time TD buds - Paul, Kees, Harvey, Mark, John, Brad, Kai and Luis.

I liked this post of Mahler’s an awful lot.

#18

I’m more flattered when he still had time to reply PMs (with quality questions of course) during his insane hours. And he answered my questions (first reply) on Q&A session. Yeehaaaa…!!!

Colin, was that the time when you said to yourself, “it’s time to give back to community…” everytime to reply to a threat?

I PM’d Remi a few years back for some help on one of his modeling vids. He told me to IM him. When I did, he directed connected to me and started going through step by step the whole process. That was the start of what has become one of the best friendships I’ve ever had.

Not really a mentor thing but I like the way beaker (Deke Kinkaid) offers up advice. It aint easy working full-time and being helpful and I can’t imagine what it would be like to be a mod. A lot of folks are happy to talk about 3d but no-one wants to go into details about comp.
