There’s no reason it needs to be fictional, you could sell it to a furnature manufacturer. From what I see, you have a well researched design with some cool features. The only things I’d like to see is some optional extras like a slidey outy shelf that’s wide enough to hold a reasonbly sized midi keyboard and some adjustable height stands for audio monitors.
Which is your preferred workspace system of the following?
Well, since the hand-in is in 2 weeks it will remain fictional for now. It is important for me to get all the presentation materials right before then. This is also the reason why I won’t adjust the design any more:)
I tried to remove the spelling errors as far as I could find any, but do you feel there is something missing in the booklet, or wrong?

Would you say it convincing and interesting/appealing?

Nail on the head.
If anything I just want a as plain desk as possible, the larger the better so I can put more monitors on it my flight gear and wacom, so I’m not resting a plank of wood on a trash can like I am now.
Also if your building a desk id like a cup holder, Ive lost a couple of good keyboards over the years due to jerk reactions around cans and cups.
You have an KVM but you are using multiple keyboards?
I guess you are using a not so well working KVM Switch?
I had some issues with one KVM in the past (don’t know the brand anymore), it somehow didn’t always recognized my keyboard with a PS/2 connection when I swiched between multiple systems. I bought another one with USB support and had no issues anymore.
The brochure has been corrected and sent of the printers, and the result was actually really good quality wise, so I am very happy with that.
Here is the animation I rendered out which will be played at the show next week. It took a while to render, about 1,5 weeks on one of my computers over in the Netherlands, but I like how it turned out.
I’ve put in some post DOF to put emphases on certain parts.
What do you think?

I’d have to agree that a large platform configuration seems to be the most versatile.
It has it’s shortcomings.
I always have a cluttered desktop too because of the tablet.
So the bigger the area the better.
If you look at the setup they use in professional edit bays that’s probably a good starting point.
Here’s a few things I’d like to see in an edit bay setup.
- A small arm support/writing surface you pull out while using the mouse.
- A retractable arm on the underside of the desktop instead of a keyboard drawer.
The keyboard arm should be able to pull out straight so the keyboard sits in the same position as it does with a drawer.
But it should also be able to pull out to either side when you’re using the tablet. - A good conduit system for cables and built in power outlet and ethernet plates.
- The option of a KVM switch and wi-fi and bluetooth ports(so if your tower is obscured you can basically use the desktop as an extender)
- On both side columns under the desktop there should be a place to put a tower.
There should be a hinged panel that allows you direct and total access to the tower where you can just unplug it and take it out without any sliding or anything. - A few mounting boxes for external HD’s that keeps them from taking up needed space on the desktop but also gives you quick access to them.
On the aesthetic side-
- A glass/plexiglass section offset from the center on both sides where you can slide reference sheets for keyboard shortcuts or drawings.
The entire desk should be rock solid, especially the desktop surface.
Hey Guys,
Here is the final design proposal. Would you be so kind as to look at it and possibly give me a quote or two as feedback for my dissemination document?
Cheers,
Joep
I found this setup to be ideal for me. It’s easy to clean under, and also on the surface (cleaning all those small boards is a mess). It’s easy to reconfigure (you can simply buy more separate elements like shelves to place under or near the table). It doesn’t pressure you psychologically (if you have all those things over your head).

The price in Ukraine for such a wooden table is 650 dollars, by the way. It’s interesting how much it is in other countries.
People here say 1 meter by 2, but for me it’s an overkill, I prefer 180 cm by 80 cm. I don’t know, perhaps it has to do with my height and arms width, but I found it to be more suitable (my height is around 180 cm). But I also feel this rate (1x2) is correct for the working surface.
It’s not fancy, but it doesn’t have to be. The simplicity has something to do with being a designer, so you know by the guts you don’t need 1000 shelves. It may be tempting only for people “thinking” it’s more comfortable
eeded.
I was talking to my granddad who makes furniture, and I couldn’t persuade him to make me such a simple table. He showed me table which was invented by him and designed by Ukrainian institute, and is very reliable.
-Granddad, can you make me a simple table?
-YES I can!
-(me) I will show you my designs…
-No, you don’t have to! I have an excellent table! I will serve even for your grandsons (oh yes, especially since I don’t want children)!
…
-(me) (palmface)…yeah, ok, I will call you back!
It may be reliable, but looks awful. I guess if he would design cars, they would look like tanks. Many people who make such an awful furniture are not designers by themselves. And they don’t give a damn about us (designers). At least here.
But it’s for a home setup\freelance. If you work in the office, psychologically it may be more suitable to have a separate working space (3 walls), and sitting the way you can see someone is approaching. Not because to hide pornosites, but because psychologically it’s more comfortable.
D,E and G are not very interesting, F is ok…the rest sound more practical and functional
Guys, please reply to the question at hand about the final design, that would be very nice
Thank you
Joep
-the workdesk shape is good
-the shelves could be placed under the table not to clutter the look
-perhaps it’s my bad memories about plastic soviet furniture, bu the legs don’t look too well. Maybe better simply straight?
Moving piece of keyboard? Hmm, maybe… but isn’t it better to make the table bigger? Is it small enough you will need to move back? Th monitors are 24 inch judging from the keyboard size, and assuming the distance, the moving part is redundant.
All those holes in the table… I think they ruin the look. You can never ged rid of them, but they will always stay. Are they necessary really?
The rotating table, why? What’s the need?
The gear for moving monitors is not needed also, you can simply move them closer\further, is the desk is big enough. And they are placed too high. A usual monitor is fine about its placing.
The shelves in the round part are not reliable about its construction, especially if you put osmething heavy there. Then again, rotating thing… is it for hot coffee?
I really like this one:

There is a lot of space on the desk to put your stuff on and I really like the flat whiteboard.
However, I would prefer some sort of wooden wall against the back of the desk to hang pictures on.
If this would be in a store, I would buy one! (If I had the money… :P)
Not to burst your bubble, but I think people should get away from this type of setup. I find working at a desk supremely uncomfortable most of the time, whether it’s adjustable or not.
If your assignment was to create an office product that fits the traditional approach, then I think you’ve succeeded with a number of your designs. The rotating shelves are a bit gimmicky/novel and I feel the same about the rotating white board. But overall, I don’t think either of those are enough to become deciding factors for a purchaser. Outside of that, it’s just a desk like any other.
If you really want to develop something incredible, design a damned chair that isn’t complete garbage and is under $150.
Did you ever come up with a solution for this problem?
