Well, that probably shows best why people visit cgtalk less and less. Why would you delete a thread like this?
Where is the "discussion gone?
That is really a pitty!
Even if I didnt participate on the discussion till now, I found it really interesting, because I felt exactly the same.
The facebook groups and other places, I dont like at all, You dont find anything there. But it seems that this new fast way of communication, is exactly what the younger generation want. A topic is there for a short time and then it is gone in the facebook nirvana.
I am also one of the older guys here, with my 43 years :D, and I prefer a discussion board to be honest.
But yeah, if discussion about such things is something the people here dont want…
well, that sucks. I was actually in the middle of reading it, went to page 2 and its blown away.
Maybe CGTalk is going to shit. Too bad. I’ve been hanging around here since 2000. I never gave up on it.
Hey Markus,
More than welcome to start a thread or look up one already active discussing social vs forums we ask that people keep it productive and on a topic not why one site is better than the other, or this sites sucks that site sucks. I like that you are interested in the WHY factor
Please check out sticky at the top of the forum here first to see what gets a thread deleted if you have any concerns
As I informed Tiles last night, when I deleted the thread, there have been a few threads posted with the same title covering the comparison of social networks vs. forums and the site here with some great feedback. If there are 5 threads posted this week about the same topic the most recent will get deleted and the active thread will stay live. But threads that lead to trolling that are nonproductive or step into member barries mode in regards to the site will be moderated.
We are as interested in what people would like moving forward. We also understand that the most vocal is not the only voices that matter. With our focus for the past six months working on updating 15 yr old software, the small team has been less active in order to bring new features to the site and partnerships.
These things take time and manpower, ultimately the site is as good as the people that choose to be a positive impact. The sites traffic is way up so saying it’s dead doesn’t help much. Our biggest complaint has been on the portfolio side of things and the ability to upload art or organize the site as it has grown over the years. We have been focusing a lot on making sure the forum software gets fixed because of this and working the way people want it to be. What helps is to say I would like more of? We listen and are making changes… or being one of the people that contribute more of. If you used to get 100 people saying wow cool image and miss that because that used to happen a lot, then that’s a good conversation that’s already been discussed in other threads but saying CGS sucks because is not really that helpful. The FB like button made saying “wow good job” feel like to much work, or it feels half-hearted even when I say it on people post at times
The like button is a short cut to saying I appreciate looking at your work or good job. If you think the site has gone down hill because there are a lot more post asking simple questions like, which software is best for hardsurface modeling etc. that used to be banned. Then you probably won’t like the site because young up and coming users need a place to ask these questions, and that is important to us. We also are looking for new ways to help support artist starting out Kickstarter and marketing there sites and work outside even on other sites like station and polycount because that’s what matters to us and those things were banned for a long time due to the size of the site and difficulty moderating. The fact that the art here that is featured is art uploaded in the past week on a weekly basis helps up coming artist get the exposure they don’t get from other sites, and that has made some upset as well, but all are welcome.
This is the third time posting a response like this to a why is CG society dead or where have the artist gone. Simply put, have a discussion on what things interest you or do you want more of or less of. However, comments such as the size of a font or whether or not the site is dead/alive in which is a matter of your own personal opinion, new post such as that which leads to trolling gets deleted. When the new site launches shortly, contribute what you do or don’t want to the suggestions thread otherwise it’s like being the guy that doesn’t vote and bitches to everyone.
We are in the process of launching a new version with updated software which includes an area for feedback and suggestions. CG Society is a free forum and as a free forum has a small budget so for anyone wanting to help with content, moderation, forum leading or innovation ideas and discussion are always welcome. In those conversations, please be respectful of the team. People trying to help is one of the few rules of the forum.
Markus care to start a thread and help us keep it moderated as a non bias member? If so there is no problem starting that conversation or continuing it. Your help would be welcome. Comments like feedback is not welcome here, is unwarranted.
some easy rules of engagement
Software and Visual of the site are already being updated
what kind of engagement are you looking for or content is important that is good to cover more of?
How can the site be more welcoming and less elitist yet serve veterans?
We are not competitive and support other sites/ we are not trying to be other sites/ if you like another site better, what are features you like? what are features you don’t? Slamming this site or others or the people that devote there time like AMAZING Robert deserve a level of respect for what they do. Slamming them or others for not giving you what you want is not tolerated!
Please check out sticky at the top of the forum here first to see what gets a thread deleted if you have any concerns
Yeah, nice sticky. This sticky is more a slap into my face.
Comments like feedback is not welcome here is unwarranted.
Unwarranted? You have already censored away my feedback. It was not welcome.
Anyways. When the users are your enemies and this forum is a warzone, then count me as gone.
Yes Tiles we reserve the right to moderate or delete threads and nearly never have to with members here.
(XXXX) you user, is a reason for being deleted or moderated and takes threads into an area unwarranted on the forum for trolling and negativity please edit your thread or it will be deleted there is a lenghty explanation for why your thread was deleted
Well, I don’t think the thread was trashing CGTalk–just commenting on something that everyone has noticed…I think the “wow!” factor has worn off of the entire field of CGI.
But squashing the discussion is just pretending it doesn’t exist, and it is a slap in the face to the members who ARE using the forum!
@Travis, edited.
By the way, there is such thing as a word filter for forum software that simply filters out bad words. There should not be a need for me to figure out what words are allowed and what not.
But i guess this falls again under unwanted feedback …

Thanks Zandoria I agree the thread was not deleted for trashing CG Talk. As mentioned a thread is more than welcome to discuss the topic if moderated by members here to keep things pg and social not a trolling thread as you can see this one is quickly becoming

When a thread is deleted the user is notified to let that topic be reintroduced in the past year less than 3 threads have had to be deleted on a site with over 300,000 users which says a lot about the members

Trolling thread? I don’t know what thread you are reading. I currently read a thread where an admin starts to accuse its users. And this is not funny.

Here is a link to a Duplicate thread that’s been up for a while now that contains the post previously discussed. As you can read from the replies there it was kept fairly positive. as mentioned you are welcome to post a new thread and keep it cool and constructive.
I assume something must have happened in the original thread that led to its deletion… Judging by your reply here, Travis, it must have been some bold unjustified critique or an offensive post. Still, I found that there was important piece of information and it wasn’t really about cgtalk only. My particular interest was reading why people think the industry is f***ed up and tends to get worse.
So why delete the entire thread? You could have just deleted the offending posts and let others have a decent conversation, otherwise it feels like censoring content that you don’t like to see posted on cgtalk. Deleting it only confirmed to me that something’s not right here.
Sorry guys already covered all of this don’t have all day to keep posting replies on this subject the topic is open for discussion as mentioned. I have also linked to the originalduplicate topic where the discussion was previously happening
I don’t know how many moderators you currently have, but if you need any more, let me know. I am currently a moderator at Cadtutor.net and have been for almost 10 years. I have also been a moderator on a few other smaller forums which I stepped away from several years ago. I do enjoy being part of the team, behind the scenes, and would appreciate the opportunity to join the team here.
So, I think it is clear now what happens to the other thread.
Maybe we can get back to the old topic. I think it doesn’t make any sense to continue here and blame each other on why the other thread was deleted. Thats a neverending discussion. …
However, I think it had been nicer to just CLOSE it and point to the already existing thread and not just delete it.
So my suggestion is we stop this one here and move the discussion to the existing thread. …in a constructive way
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=2&t=1359422&highlight=talk+dead
so was it removed because many similar threads exist, or because of the content itself? If it’s the first, why not simply merge them? If it’s the second, can you point out what was ‘problematic’? the phrase ‘cgtalk is dead’?
No sense in arguing this point, people. It’s their playground, their toys, and their rules. If we don’t like it, well, tough. Not saying that it’s right or wrong. That’s just how it is. Those of you who have either been a longtime member or lurker know this to be true. This is not the first time, nor will it be the last, that CG Talk has been guilty of such aggressive moderating. CG Talk runs a tight ship and the system heavily favors both the mods/admin and status quo. Fairness is relative. To put it bluntly, our being allowed to post here is a privilege, not a right. I’ve been part of the online CG community for nearly 20 years now. This is just how CG Talk does things. Don’t act so shocked.
To those in charge, I just want to say this. Handle these redundant threads as you see fit. Close them. Delete them. Print them out and fold them into paper hats. It’s your call. However, I implore you to to please internalize these criticisms and take them seriously. Some are mean, but most are largely meant for your benefit and the continued survival of this community. This dissatisfaction is coming from somewhere and should be addressed. In those 20 years, I’ve seen many great forums, small and big, come and go. CG Talk is not above such things.
Anyway… That’ll be the last that I say on this topic. Thanks.
