What's your background/experience?

Hi all,

I’m just wondering what kind of background/experience all you Wings users have. For example, professional background, education, other application experiences, etc.

I myself am a newbie to 3D  Wings is the first app I’ve used and I really love it.

First 3D modeling software I installed was on a friend’s pc and it was a demo of Nendo back in '98…Then I tried Infini-D which I loved.

A few weeks later,I bought my own first PC along with a promising new software called Milkshape

The need for more later brought me to Gmax,MayaPLE and Softimage Xsi Exp which I all still use.

Basically what got me interested into 3D was to create something…Just that

As a former Architectural Designer I have used AutoCAD & 3dsVIZ for years. I started doing 3d projects for fun about 18mo ago and discovered that the tools I had been using were not the way to go. Tried the 3dsMax5 demo and realised that I was clueless on how to do 3d, but that it is what I am meant to do. Played with all the various apps and fell in love with Wings3d and XSI. I quit my job and started going to school for Multimedia Design (Associates). I will likely be staying in school for another degree (Digital Recroding Arts - Bachelors) so I’ll have even more time to work on my 3d skills. If lucky, I’ll be able to attend RISD for a masters in fine art after I’m done and have learned 3d in the process. I still am a newb, but I have learned more in the last month than I have in the last year, so hopefully within a few more months I’ll make it to level 2.

I too am a newb… who delved into 3D last winter and really had a blast

I am not an artist, nor will I ever truly be, but rather I am an artisan who mows lawns and trims hedges for a living…

I am opinionated when it comes to apps mainly because when initially delving into 3D, I tried many crafting the same models with many different apps, studying as much the app and how it handled the procedures, as I did caring too too much about the models being created… so long as the mesh was right so to speak…

I kept busy watching all the forums, and reading as many tuts as I could on all the apps I was trying out and… after I started to understand procedure vs workflow, well… I havn’t been the same since…

I now know that there truly is no one app out there… and… thus far Wings3D gives the best bang for the buck that there is to be found on the planet… it’s free… and has great tools… .

no it isn’t “the app”… as stated, there really is none as of yet that I am aware of… or, by simple reasoning, there would only be one… haha, I always love bringing that one up…

anyways, you will find good loyal crowds in all the app forums… and a ton of great modelers and artists through out… and the amazing thing is… they are all able to do what they do with the tools they use… some more amazing than others simply because of how many advanced features were missing from the app they chose to craft with… I take my hat off to these dedicated folks…

as for the big companies… they are milking all for what it is worth… hey it is a biz

Thank goodness for folks like Bjorn eh?

I’ve been programming and dabbling in 3D since the days of apple II (hplot), Tandy ColorComputer, and TI99/4A.

Got smitten with the urge to do 3D graphics programming very early and got really fired up when I saw the Dire Straits “Money for Nothing” video.

Went to college to study Math and Computer Science and have a dual degree in these disiplines. Some of what I learned is wasting away … but I do enough hobby programming to actually learn a few more tricks from time to time.

I’m really inspired by what Bjorn and other plugin programmers have done with their spare time over the last few years.

I want to buy ZBrush.
