I managed to get up to 334 million polys on a Dell 8 core with 21GB RAM on 64bit Vista Business using a NVIDIA QuadroFX 3700. Took forever to get that last subdivide in (approx 35 minutes) but sculpting was still possible at that res without too much slowdown.
I’m interested to hear how high other people have gone.
What's the highest divisions you've reached in Mudbox?
oh this is really high… my highest polyoutn was 32 mio…
but i think with a good planed basemesh i can go even higher on my 8gig rig…
haha, get back to us and let us know how long it took to render that displacement map.
That’s nuts… but there is really no need for that kind of detail… Unless maybe your doing IMAX or something, but still…
yeah, it’s definitely overkill but it’s nice to know that it’s possible and my computer can handle it. I’m pretty sure that it wouldn’t be possible in ZBrush.
went up to 135Million Polys, sculpting was possible, my 12gigs of RAM were on full load though.
Core I7 920 CPU
GTX 260 VGA
I’m guess that ZBrush could do that w/o too much problems since it uses more efficient proprietary 2.5D “pixols” whereas mudbox just cranks up polycounts with less optimization.
Google “Zbrush” and “billion”.
I think what’s great about this is the fact that mud can handle as much as you throw. But sheesh, 21 gigs? Wowzer. I’m still sub 6 mill.
Can you bake a map from them? No
Are they ‘raw polys’ ?..no
We are talking RAW polycounts not shading tricks
