What Material color do you use when modeling

#1

grey , white or lighter colors? anyone know the RBG for the maya grey color used when creating objects?

Well, you can use default phong. It’s easy on the eyes.
If you don’t like it edit it’s attributes and save it as material-phong.spdl
in XSI?\Application\phenolib\spdl\sibase
Then it should be your default material when creating objects.

I use just dark grey phong with strong and rough specular.
One neat trick is also to animate lights to spin around the model, and do the modelling at the same time, then you can see the form better.

spinning lights around the model? thats a new one for me, ill give that a try. what are the benefits over just turning on the headlight?
as for the original post, basic phong, tinted to whatever colour you like, i find mid grey is fine but to shake things up a bit an orange tint works nicely. and pop the cameras headlight on so you can see whats going on(why is this not on automatically for the user camera? this confused the hell out of me when i first started using xsi from max)

i use a basic phong with a bit of specular, headlight off, and a custom light rig that is parented to a null and constrained to the position/orientation of the camera. as you move around the light rig adjust with you (much like the default ‘headlight’ does). This allows me to set the light’s colors to better aid with whatever i’m working on.
