Yet Another Free Raytracer (Yafray ).

Is a raytracing renderer, its a plugin for Wings, which can give you better renders and stuff.

To install it :

1)Install Yafray to C:/Yafray (or whatever your drive label is)
2)Open wings, go to edit>plugin preferences. Click on Yafray.
3)You should now get a new window, Click browse and choose the yafray.exe.

That should do it.

I use version 0.0.4 so maybe a few of these problems were solved but need to be mentionned;

-Use View/Scene Lights and create a light or two,Yafray cannot render using the Head-On camera light or the Custom Setting(1-2 lights)

-I personally can’t get a render to work when I have mirrored OR Virtual Mirrored geometry, the renderer seems to hang eternally,so if you’re modeling a character and want to render it,setup another scene, export the model to it via preferably Obj and re-import in the new scene, the render shouldn’t hang anymore

Other than that,it’s bloody fast and efficient

Actually, Yafray IS NOT a plug-in for any app. Yafray is an independent program and it can work/render without the need of any other program, just by the user giving command line options to it. It first started as an effort to complement the Blender’s internal render engine but always been developed as an independent software.

However, even the fact that it can work by his own foot, to make it easier to use the developers of Yafray has teamed with developers of other popular 3D software to create in tandem plug-ins that make those 3D programs communicate seamlessly with Yafray. Wings3D and Blender3D are two of those programs that can comunicate with Yafray without the user giving any command-line option. There are other 3D programs than can “talk yafray” but I don’t remember their name right now.

Right now Yafray is a Ray-tracing renderer, but his more apealing feature is it’s extensive GI (Global Illumination) features.

I realize that you have to add a light into the scene in order to see anything other than back in yavray. I added 1 point light and enabled view > scene lights, but when I render it, it’s still pitch black. I’ve moved the light several times around at different angles. Does anyone know what’s going on?

Thanks in advance.

Oooh! Didnt know that. Thanks for correcting me Apollux!:bounce:

Since we can add our own command line options within Wings3D itself(unless I’m mistaken by what I saw),I think it could be fairly useful to some to read the documentation, looks fun and easy.

While it seems most of the important features are already adjustable within wings there are a few interesting lights and background commands.

I have many lights setup in my scene (point lights), yet I still get a pitch black render :/… screenshots:

Render outcome:

I’m pretty sure that I installed yafray correctly, the yafray option shows up on file > render menu. Help is much appreciated.

I’m pretty new to this so if I’m missing something that’s blatantly obvious to you, forgive me.

Thanks!

Might want to try a newer version, they’re up to 0.0.6, I believe.

I’ve also had problems with Virtual Mirrors, though, and I am not sure why that is a problem. My guess is that it’s a problem with the exporter, not Yafray.

just out of curiosity, have you adjusted the power in the light options for yafray? i was having that problem and i realized if i set the yafray light power(output) to about 11 or higher it becomes visible. i also noticed your using point lights, try using a single ambient light with the power set to 11 or so. i think if you get those point lights to light up it will look like the cops are raiding the house(haha just joking)

A few questions:

-Does Yafray work with all versions of Wings3D?
-Is Yafray free in terms of money? (I feel silly asking this one, but I was kinda confused by which “free” they meant).
-Lastly, is there anything I should be warned about so that I don’t damage my computer?

I think recent versions of wings3d now has support for yafray…so yeah…it works nicely.

yes, its free.

and no, there is no bugs and glitches as far as I know.
