What is this layer technique ???

Hi, i have been using ps for many years but as being self taught there are many things i don’t know how to do. While watching a video on youtube i noticed a technique and immediately knew how much it would help me in the way i work but couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to do it. I didn’t know who to ask or where to look so i made an account here i hope thats ok.

Basically he does something which allows him to paint on his base colour layer without going over the edges.

The option you’re looking for is called “Lock transparent pixels” and is the leftmost button at the top of the layer panel.

Ohh yes, i realise it to be a combo of that and creating a clipping mask, thanks a lot for your help.
