What is the most powerful emotional scene you have seen in an animated movie? (3D and 2d)?

I am really interested how in animation an artist is asked to pull a performance out of thin air. What is impressive is that for me some of the most emotional moments in filmmaking have been done in animated movies.

I am curious to see what are the most emotional scenes in an animated movie for the people in the forum.

Ok here are mine:
(3D) Toy Story
Scene: When Buzz Lightyear in Toy Story 1 decide to make a futile attempt at flying. He just found out that he was a toy and that his effort was futile. But he tried anyway.

(2D):Nausicca and the Valley of the Wind
When Nausiica, a hardcore pacifist, put her life on the line to save the little OMU insect. Instead of an epic battle with the people dragging the little create, she just stand up on her glider to become a perfect target.

2d)

Littlefoot’s momma got jacked by T-Rex. He was all alone.

3d)

Nemo’s brothers and Mamma getting killed by the Barcudda. Poor widowed father.

To thought right now only DIsney movies come up. Fantasia is a emotional roller coaster. One type of emotion I’ve noticed lately however is sadness and used quite effectively. One that catches my eye is Stich in Lilo & Stitch in the forest scene when he realizes Lilo has a family but Stitch doesn’t. He begins to cry. Pure essence there man:0

Gollum by far has a real emotion of broken and split personality (bay raitt:D)

Mike in Mike’s New Car is quite real to that effect if realism is the word you use to replace emotion. Remember emotion is just not sadness (it just seems that way lately… GAH!)

Happiness? hrmm… draws a blank

The scene in Toy Story 2 when Sarah McLaughlin sings “When She Loved Me” and Jesse tells her story. An unparalleled emotional event in CG history if you ask me.

I was kinda stunned by the scene where Gollum consoles himself in the cave. I wasn’t a fan of LOTR and only saw it on DVD cuz there wasn’t anything else to rent. Very impressive indeed:thumbsup:

The scene in Monsters Inc when “Kitty” and Boo say goodbye…

I hate to admit it, but I’m a sucker for that stuff…

IRON GIANT!

“Superman…”

That flick makes me cry like a little schoolgirl.

Gotta vote for the “When She Loved Me” segment in Toy Story 2 as well…that really got me too. They had some great emotional scenes in TS1 but that blew em away.

They’re good at that though. Monster’s Inc, Nemo, definitely nailed me at the right moments.

Will think of others…

even though everyone calls it cliche’…
final fantasy when Ryan is wounded and stuck in the vehicle but uses his last bit of life to help dr.sid, gray, and aki escape from the launch bay by shooting at that big’o’spirit thing then is killed by another spirit thingy…

another would be the entire LOTR movies…(call me a fanboy I guess)…lol

Final Fantasy 7 when Aeris dies…i kept thinkin’ “say it aint so!” almost had to just turn it off and throw the game away, but I kept playing hoping she would come back to life…oh well.

Grave of the Fireflies…the WHOLE movie is just one big ball of sadness.

Omoide Poro Poro: after the baseball game when the boy she likes finally talks to her, and she runs up to the clouds and starts to fly. That was classic.

Yeah that is one of many scenes in that movie that tug at the ole heart strings.

3D: In “Ice Age” where Diego died on screen. Animated by Mike Thurmier. Too bad it didn’t make it to screen or on the DVD. Really powerful, and uber subtle stuff. Fox opted for the “nine lives, baby” version.

2D: In “Iron Giant” when the Iron Giant says “Superman” just before he takes one on the chin.

There are a lot more in the Disney movies, but I’m trying to stay kind of current.

(2D)
“Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron”

I was never interested in watching it and i did put it off one time because the movie channel was showing it in full screen. The second time i stumbled upon the beginning of the movie i watched it.

All i have to say is there is no other animated feature that has that amount of emotion in it. Half way through the movie i started weeping. Even when the movie was finished, i felt like i was recovering from a very sad event.

2D: Fantasia [1940]
The entire film was one big collage of emotion.

3D: Toy Story 2 [1999]
The musical scene when we learn about Jessie’s past, and how she was abandoned by her owner was very good. Not only did that scene have a lot of emotion, but it also had a lot of depth.
