What is the Best Laptop for Maya Effects and Nuke?

#1

I am looking to buy a laptop for doing heavy 3d effects and compositing.

What is the best one I should get? What would give me the best value?

I am thinking about the $2k range, and I would like it to be PC based.

Something light weight would be a bonus.

Please help

thanks!

The best value would be a desktop. If you truly mean heavy effects and compositing then I wouldn’t use a laptop. Most laptops have two DIMM slots which means 16 GB of memory, there are some with four DIMM slots for 32 GB of memory but they are not really in the $2,000 range. In other words, don’t get a laptop. If you must get a laptop then I’d suggest a ThinkPad W540 which has four DIMM slots, optional 3K resolution screen with integrated colorimeter, two drive bays, and Quadro graphics options.

Thanks Olson.

I will also be getting a desktop but needed a laptop for work as well.

Btw, I just purchased the HP ENVY Touchsmart 15-q178ca Notebook for around $1400 at Best Buy.

Did I make a bad decision? Should I return it and get the one you had suggested? I spent a lot of time getting it setup with software etc. so I would rather not go to the hassel of exchanging it unless it’s really worth it.

Here are the specs:
Intel® Core™ i7 processor
Intel® Core™ i7-4712HQ with Intel HD Graphics 4600 (2.3 GHz, 6 MB cache, 4 cores)
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (4 GB DDR3 dedicated)

Please let me know?

Thanks!

If 16 GB is enough memory then the HP laptop you purchased should work fine. Note that the already installed 16 GB is the maximum amount of memory that laptop can accommodate.
