What is Tesla?

#10

Well , picking a name like “Tesla” as the codename one would think this modeler is way ahead of its time as Nikola Tesla was IMO . Some people have said that Nikola Tesla invented the 20th century and was maybe a little eccentric as well.
I am not a user of Electric Image but I am always interested in new 3d software and with that codename I had to respond. So,will Tesla be a stand alone modeler or a plugin for EI only? Looking forward to more info on this.

Cheers

I’ve used, tested, tried, abused, and flogged nearly every modeler there is, and Modeler was one of my favorites.

Two caveats to the above:

  1. I don’t do character animation, mostly just motion graphics
  2. formZ was/is my modeler-of-choice before Modeler came and after it went. I still used it in between when I needed to do something Modeler didn’t like, booleans for example.

Hi!

Tesla will be a stand alone modeler. EITG plans to offer it to non-EIAS and EIAS users alike.

#13

Well, the idea was for EIM’s feature set to be sort of Tesla’s baseline in this first stage. I hope we get a few happy surprises in this first release, though.

#14

Well I just got off the phone with Brad…I’m hoping to get a sneak peak of Tesla while in end stage Alpha to influence the program’s direction. Beta is right around the corner.

Make sure to spill some beans when you give it a whirl.

EIM was no small task to bring out initially so I’m guessing it will be very close to EIM 5.x for the first release. Maybe brought up to date with the new ACIS Version…if it still uses that. If not, then I hope they went with Mcneel’s Open Nurbs.

In any case, I’m looking forward to seeing what Kishore has come up with.

#16

Oh I’ll see how many beans I can spill. I do know that the ASICs kernal is fully up to date.

I doubt this, but I would love some form of a connection between Tesla and EIAS. Anything besides the usual save out Fact from Tesla, import Fact into EIAS. I know the future of Tesla and EIAS will most likely be more integrated but it would be nice in V1 to see something. Selfishly, I want to be able to import illustrator files into Tesla in some form.
Something for the ‘mograph/designers’ to be familiar with.

Side Note - just rendered 300 frames of heavily textured and raytraced D1 output in 12 minutes on my 8 core! I LOVE cameras speeeeed : )

#18

We want our Tesla’s GUI porn!

EIM was able to import Illustrator’s (and Freehand’s, poor thing  ) .ai files, already.

thanks for filling me in on the illustrator thing.

And did a damn-fine job of it too. One of the better apps for bringing in Illustrator files.

Though dollar for dollar, when it comes to making beveled type nothing can touch Invigorator Pro Modeler.

#21

beveled ANYTHING. I absolutely agree on that. EI\Tesla could have a “bevel designer”
similar, at least a little, to invigerator. 98% of type done in C4d and Maya looks so
‘bad 3d-ish’ those apps are capable, but for beveling they seem cumbersome.

Hey Scott8983,

Why do you say Modeler didn’t like booleans?
I always thought Modeler was great at booleans.

Just one more point that seems very important to me concerning Tesla:

I´m into 3D-modeling for ten years now, most of the time with Unigraphics,
as I started out in the CAD-scene.
From the first day I was so lucky beeing able to use tools like spaceball (3D connexion nowadays…),
This tools save an incredible amount of time, because you can do several different navigation-movements
in ONE step and with the “non-mouse-hand”.
I always felt kind of castrated in modelers which didn`t support that devices.

So…please dont forget to implement the support of this essential tool. Everything else would be ridicolous in my eyes for a brandnew modeler called "Tesla". Please apologize this harsh words, but I know that even today there are a lot of modelers out there who still deny the benefits of that decice. Ok, everybody has got its own workflow…but working that way looks to me like using
“Fred Feuerstein”-cars without steering wheels…

Cheers
Tom

It would be good if Tesla phases out facts all together. It’s a format that closed, and doesn’t allow for any current output like vertex animation, or clusters. The should go with FBX or something else than Just FACT.

#25

Ya, that was my absolute favorite strength of Modeler. I thought Form-Z booleans were not as straight forward. Hope Tesla is everything that Modeler was and MORE!

Some inspiration for the Tesla programmer(s)

More inspiration.

Holy cow! The SpaceClaim product is amazing. Not a general D modeler, definitely geared toward CAD/CAM, but there are some very sweet features/implementations. In particular, the real-time feedback of most of the operations is very nice. Of course, at over $2000, it better be nice
