What IS relighting?

#1

Hi there,

I’ve heard of this term a lot but never properly described. While I can guess that it is used for editing the lights in post (?) I’ve no idea how to except to render each light as a separate pass in white and put them together changing them each to the color of choice. But then, what is this RGB lighting? It makes no sense to me and what has normal maps to do with relighting?

Google surprisingly has very little to clear my doubts. This whole things seems like something everybody knows pretty well but do not talk about it. With me being the outsider guessing to no end!

Any clarification would be very helpful.
Thanking you,
Timothy.

Makes sense now. The idea is really cool. Someone once had mentioned a scenario where normal maps were used to create rim lights. I can understand that now.

Thanks again.
