Week 1: WIP/Homework Submissions

#82

Jennie Griswold, Week 1

My submission is a small room inside the front end of a wooden ship that acts as a shrine to a local goddess. The aesthetics are inspired by simple northern & eastern European wood carvings and churches. I want it to feel very old and well-used and otherworldly (the only light coming from candles and lots of smoke from incense in the air)…and maybe slightly creepy to outsiders! There are a lot of other details I have in mind (other furniture, dried flowers hanging from the ceiling, a skull) but didn’t have space/time to put them all in this initial drawing. I’ve never done environment art before (and am still learning to draw on the computer instead of with a pencil) so any and all feedback is welcome!

I like your concept excerpt. Your reference images really support where your going with your world creation. I also like your treatment of the texture /surface of your vehicle (rocks) :).

You mention decorations…

Were you thinking just painting or would there be animal parts involved like feathers, animal skulls, stone carvings on the bottom , or Totems maybe ? They dont have to be made of wood…

Just some ideas to ge the juices flowing…

Thank you so much - well almost everything is free hand except vertical lines - for those I used shift if they were truly vertical

#85

Hi! Vojin Djordjevic, week 1
I picked up a theme “Ghost Woods” , so it will be mostly organic , but i’m going to add some non-organic ruined structure or something like that.

#86

Thanks for that  I haven`t put a great deal of thought into the colours yet, but my first thought was a green/blue colour, like a teal, but I may make a flower red/orange.

#87

@jmatthewsdigital Thank you, maybe we can ask that question during the webinar!

@Dvici Thanks so much! Haha yeah I do tend to go a bit overboard with reference. While working I didn’t look at the full board most of the time, but zoomed in on just one image or even just one detail at a time. That helps

#88

Hey Dvici,

The references I have been using have been odd shaped tree trunks with oddly shaped faces in them. I cant say I have personally looked for a game or movie in particular. However this is a great area to look for reference.

So I have decided to actually change some things up and look at these references, Sleepy Hollow as you have already posted a reference is amazing, But im going to be pulling a lot of tree references from Dark Souls 3, because thinking about it now that’s the perfect setting and feel I want. I am wanting to incorporate a glow effect much like a feel you posted in one of your other comments about avatar, the lighting has always astonished me.

Thank you for your comment and references  I hope this gives you an idea and a feel for where im wanting to take this piece.

#89

I think it really doesn’t have to be fantastic, to be fantastic work  … and you can always add some fantastic elements to an ordinary environment.

#90

Wow these are great. I am excited to see how it all comes together!

#91

Thank you :grinning:. Yeah I struggle with colour too. I like grey scale, you just have to imagine where your light source is coming from and if you’re surfaces are matte or shiny. I like dramatic lighting, that’s what I am aiming for.

#92

These are great!

#93

Hey Lyraina,

Im really excited about the haunted forest. I defiantly want to explore some more tree shapes. Thanks for the idea

#94

Yeah, I like these tent thingies you came up with.
I think a lot of us are busy but would rather be here doing this. It’s hard to dedicate more to something I enjoy when my day job pays well. :persevere:
Just keep powering forward! I myself would love to add more to mine but will have to see if I can carve out more time.

#96

Well said! :slightly_smiling_face:

#97

It does give me a good idea Darksouls is a great game .

Just dont be afraid to post your references with your drawings. It helps orient others to your concept direction

#98

Hi David,

Would love to have that “fine point pen” brush you are using. You said it is “one of your custom brushes” . Would you consider posting it?

Also, forgive me if it’s in Corel and I just can’t find it, new to the program.

Thanks,

Taylor Shechet

Hey ho, I’m going for a South Korea-inspired environment - here are my sketches! Like many here, it’s so hard to find enough time to properly dedicate to this, but I’m sure we’ll come up with some nice things regardless

Just lineart for the moment, though I was itching to draw whole scene. I’m thinking of a view from the end of a path, looking at a building in nature, with water, boulders and trees. Should be challenging; I’ve sketched a lot in the past but haven’t done all too much digital painting yet. Let me know your thoughts!

Hello everybody,

It’s Vladislav Andonov - Week 1 WIP

I am thinking about… something like an Art Nouveau style environment, perhaps a Steam Punk one with Art Nouveau designs.

Hello lovely people-

I’m Bre Sorenson, this is the first of my Week 1 WIP submissions. I’m currently shooting for a deep-forest tree-house oasis idea, with maybe a few rustic elements. But we’ll see.

Steve Jobs said that “Real artists ship.” …so here I go  I’ll try to be a real artist.

I welcome any and all constructive criticism and feedback, as I do plan on working on this a lot more over the next few days. I plan on submitting the progress too.

Oh- and- haha forgive my stylistic chicken scratch sketching. I can’t tell you how many times I was ready to just give up and go back to my real acrylic paints. Grey scale is killing me just a bit!

WIP Update 2 - (didn’t occur to me to just edit my original post about fifteen minutes ago… …sorry I posted twice)
