Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club 015: January 14 - 20 2009

#1

Hi guys, welcome to the Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club thread.

The idea of this series of week long threads is to be an incubator for your sequential
art ideas. This mean you can post ANYTHING that will facilitate the creation of your comic. (This means ideas, scripts, Concept Art, Finished art ) for:
[ul]
[li]One panel Strip [/li][li]Three to Four Panel Strips[/li][li]Comic Book [/li][li]Storyboards (NEW!)[/li][/ul]Think of it of a club within the forum for people who WANT to do comics.

GENERAL RULES:
[ul]
[li]Every Wednesday night a new week long thread will be posted on the CGTalk Daily Sketch Forum called:Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club XXX: MONTH YEAR [/li]

This will be the CORE thread, created by the moderator, (that would be me)

[/ul]
[ul]
[li]You can post on the core thread anything you want as long as it related a to a sequential art idea[/li][li]If yo ualready have a web comic, well SHOW IT to us…[/li][li]WIP entries should be on the artists WIP thread. This thread might be hosted on the WIP forum OR…the Member SKETCH Collection [/li][li]This is a thread to allow creators to have fun so please feel free post your Comments[/li][/ul]IF and only IF we gather enough interest we might start doing voting for:
[ul]
[li]Best Writing [/li][li]Best Story [/li][li]Best Art[/li][li]Most Updates[/li][li]Most Views (IE Highest ratings: I want to keep track on who has been getting the highest number of hits on the WIP thread for the comic…more on this later[/li][/ul]Keep this in mind.
A monthly comic book has 24 pages. And in order to have enough material for a graphic novel you should need to do 6 issues of a comic.

24 * 6 = 144 pages

This is why most pros do a at least a page a day.

And please if you do comic book, do it in multiple of 2.
Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club 010: December 10 - 16 2008
Hi guys, welcome to the Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club thread.

My advice, KEEP IT SIMPLE

If you think you can’t to a full comic book, do a 3 - 4 panel
newspaper strip. 5 - 10 updates a month are more than enough in my book.
And if you are going to do a comic book, do short stories first , since they usually have
4 to 6 pages. Think Twilight Zone, Tales from the Crypt or Amazing Stories for inspiration.
Good luck

Understanding comics: Scott McCloud on TED.com

via TED Blog by on 1/13/09

In this unmissable look at the magic of comics, Scott McCloud bends the presentation format into a cartoon-like experience, where colorful diversions whiz through childhood fascinations and imagined futures that our eyes can hear and touch. Listen for a moving meditation on the nature of vision – and for four indelible rules of life. (Recorded February 2005 in Monterey, California. Duration: 17:08.)

Watch Scott McCloud’s talk on TED.com, where you can download this TEDTalk, rate it, comment on it and find other talks and performances from our archive of 350+ TEDTalks – including more talks about storytelling.

Incredible find Roberto!

That’s definitly given me some food for thought.

Extremely fascinating! I’m gonna have to get his book. I didn’t realize the approach he took with comics (I thought he was another sympathist-towards-comics trying to make a buck on random fan-boy literary nonsense). I’ve downloaded the movie and am watching it for the 5th time. Sequential-art is one of the most powerful visual mediums… and the USA largely dismisses it as a thing of adolescent frivolity.

Thanks for the link and info Roberto.

@Roberto: Sorry to repeat myself… but in the first posts of every “Wednesday Night Comic Creators Club” thread, the instructions are repeated twice. Makes it looks like a TON of instructions and it’s confusing.

Fixed!
Wow I missed that

TED = coolest site ever.

Interesting stuff, Rob. Thanks much. And thanks Frenzi and Temp for the explaination of your methods in the last thread. I appreciate you taking the time to explain like that.

Having taken that into consideration, along with several days loitering at Barns & Noble to brush up on photoshop, I’ve made a few adjustments now. Clearly, my first step should have been to actually learn what photoshop can do. >.<

hey guys =]
just discovered your thread today…i’ve been wanting to try drawing comics for a while, but never got around to it.
so i’ve got a question - do you have to draw something based on your own ideas, or can it be fanart of some sort?

#9

We tend to go for original ideas…

But if you want todo a story with supes or spidey, I would suggst to create an original variation on the character… And avoid elements that are trademarked, like supes shield of Bats emblem.

Good luck…

For those who wonder if it worth it to do a
indie comic…

Check out the tale of the indie comic
Scott Pilgrim…

It is about to become a feature film from Universal Pictures…

@ RedPeril - you are deffenitly improving. Keep up the good work.

I am currently working in an oilfield camp up in northern alberta and although I brought my laptop with me and and still working on my comics, they won’t allow me to hook my computer up to the camps network so I don’t think I’ll be able to uplaod anything till I get back home 2 weeks from now.

I did manage to upload a W.I.P comics just befor I left though only the first panel is done. I have already completed the second and third panel but I don’t think I will be able to get them up for a while. :frowning:

here is the W.I.P. comic. havn’t thought of a title for it yet.

Take your time man, just post stuff on this thread at your own time.

BTW on a related note…

Why don’t you write a comic about your experiences working in the oilfield camp.
Most of us will never be near this sort of environment, and frankly it sounds fascinating…
It sounds like there is a tale there waiting to be told.

@RedPeril: Looks good. What resolution are you working at? The lines are very pixelated (which would be the result of low resolution). I’d work at no less than 300ppi, and when you save a file for www posting THEN reduce the file to 72ppi. You might get cleaner lines.
@TemperalVision: Funny sketches! Time to replace the drapes…

Oni Press has a lot of great indie publications. I buy a lot of their stuff.

I did nothing but fight with my computer (it’s official, my computer is obsolete) while fixing my entry for last week (the fire-breathing “O’Rabbits”). Finally got the file exported over to Photoshop one panel-at-a-time. Panel 4 still gave me problems and I had to do a lot of editing to elements outside of the clipping mask before I was able to export it. The file only looks slightly better at 72ppi, but it’s a lot better at 300ppi. Made several minor changes as well. See both on my CGtalk WIP thread here.
