Website-Flash portfolio

#1

Howdy,
This is my website. Everything is still in the works.
Had 2 years away from anything, and this is after 4 months of re-schooling.
http://www.geocities.com/nonebula/entry.html

I know I should buy webspace and whatnot, but that comes afterwards. this is the testing ground.

I suppose instructions are to click the second link down: “Flash site 2” to see the latest Flash site specified. It says that the red blue and green buttons are working, but all 4 of them are.
I’ll change all that eventually.

Any suggestions to fix it?
Whats crappy? whats good?
I am still in the process of learning and wondering if I should start applying for web design jobs at all.

Thanx for your time and consideration.

There’s a major lack of content? Maybe I’m wrong… but when I click on any of the thumbnails it doesnt show the full image?

The coloured buttons, and the animations are very nice. I like the sounds. The coloured buttons give no indication of where they lead though… unfortunately this means that a user must navigate by chance. Confusing and tiresome.

“music is copyright:some relaxation CD I found at the library” I’m hoping you’ll actually find out the correct name for that. It looks bad otherwise.

The text area in your personal section (I’m no sure what you call that section, as there was no name for it anywhere?)… anyway back on track… the text area is really small. Reading 5 lines then having to scroll is crazy. You need to reasses the use of space there. I was generally a little confused as to the purpose of this section, especially the ‘home life’ and ‘significant other’ info. Why exactly is this in your portfolio? this kind of information will only distract a potential employer from your work. My apologies if this website is meant to be a mix of personal content and portfolio, because in that case it would be ok. Maybe there’s some food for thought there. I can see its also possible you want the site to reflect your personality, but to be honest it comes across as a little ‘kitsch’ when you present your home life, significant other and resolutions. Do you know the feeling I’m trying to show you? Imagine you visit someone else’s site… do you really want to know that ‘I need to be a vegetarian’ ? I’d prefer to see a much more subtle reflection of your personality through your work. The subject matter, composition, style, bright vs muted colours… these things say more about you and your design. I think people prefer this over direct ‘I live in a mess when on my own’.

Overall, your animations and style seems to be working pretty well. The animations in particular are well paced and are clever and interesting. Some of the style is consistent and other parts (such as the red section interface) differ from the style. I do think it still manages to hold together, but I’m just pointing it out in case this was unintentional.

ok, well enough of my rambling… A lot of it is just an opinion, so keep that in mind. I hope it can be of help to you somehow.

You did notice they were buttons even though they weren’t labeled.
that’s good.
I hang in libraries all day. As far as looking bad. . . Not much ego.
You could tell the personal section was a personal section, and the structure was taken from some dude, Eric Dolecki, as far as taking it into 3 parts.
The design and animation was mine, but the structure of “Home Life” “Work Life” and “Personal life” was out of a book I bought many years ago called “Super Flash Samurai”

Take that up with him. He’s pretty good at flash. I won’t even begin to explain the absurdities I see when looking at other people’s sites.
I don’t keep high expectations, seeing as to how I’m a person, not a corporate company.
After all this programming and designing I have no personality. It’s all technical.

The pictures didn’t come up when you clicked the thumbnails?

So I’ll add some labels and thinkup some better text.

hi the click, i do really like the site, the simplicity of it, it works really well!
There is one thing that i noticed, the second site, the green section, it looks all futuristic but the buttons have rounded edges, i think these would look better if they were had sharp edges, to go with the rest of the design!
Other than that, the rest looks really good!
I think you should apply for web design work, but try and get some yourself first (freelance) to build up your portfolio! Well worth it!!

OK.

I added labels to the pages. and I updated the profile text to make it appear more proffessional.
The round buttons stay tho.

Sheesh, tough audience around here.

Thanx for the critiques. Even if it does leave me bent out of shape. I am my own biggest critic and y’all are just adding to it.
