Hmmm. There is a problem with making it only two weeks. You have to consider those who might not be able to start right away, and of course there is the voting phase to consider. And lets not forget we must think of comic artists of all skill levels.
How about two pages in a month? Double the artwork sound good?
Double the workloadâŚ
Wouldnât really be fair to newer artists. That is was actually part of my point with suggesting a shorter time frame and shorter comic design (e.g. 3 panels). 2 weeks to do 3 panels to express as much story/emotion/whatever as you can. For vet artists it will be fairly easy and they can put in extra time if they finish early, for newer artists it will be long enough (I think) that they can spend a decent amount of time on their piece and still feel proud of their work.
Also why have a voting phase at all? Newer artists are almost guaranteed not to win, and if they have to put their time in for a whole month I would have thought they would want something out of it⌠
quite tough decision hereâŚhmmm:curious:
how about the dateline is two page per month but for any teams who can make more than that consider extra bonus/credit or carry forward to next month?
LOL, okay, well maybe double the work load isnt such a great idea. But we have a voting phase for the HMC - why not for a comic challenge?
Perhaps we can do a test in the collaborative or WIP sections? Give a small team or a single person three weeks to produce a single page?
Just thinking about it, a CGS collab similar to A Simple Life would work as the only thing that let it down was differences in animation software - 2D artwork can be attempted by anyone.
So much to consider but until we try something we just wont know.
Very true.
I think as per the voting thing, I am just opposed to it simply because for me personally it takes some of the fun out of the whole thing.
I think I would rather see something where everyone has some sort of feedback on everyone elses work rather than voting on it. But at the same time I realize that voting for others gives them a reason to continue working on the piece.
So I think on a personal level I am somewhat split on the voting aspect.
However I do think a month is much to long for a comic of any length really⌠Unless, perhapsâŚ
What if each week there was a different topic/subject that we had to make a 3 panel comic out of, HOWEVER at the end of the month (4 week process, 4 â3 panel comicsâ) the whole thing has to tie in together to make a complete story, so to speak.
So lets say;
W1 - Rabbits
W2 - Tech
W3 - Women
W4 - Mice
For each week you need to create a 3 panel (or whatever) comic that includes the topic in any way shape or form, be it from the main characters or from a planet they are on or something (a planet made out of women? haha yes please). However the real trick will be making each one of those comics form a whole story over the course of a month.
So for example you could have;
W1 - A few guys go out one day to hunt rabbit
W2 - Until they find out the rabbits are actually machines!
W3 - They enlist the help of a saucy, foxy young women assassin
W3 - Where upon her main weapon are mice and she kills the rabbits and everyone lives happily ever after!

No? haha.
Ya so many options to consider.
Re: Geta-Ve.
LOL, what are we going to do with you, eh?:hmm:
Perhaps we could hold a one-off comic challenge for this summer just to test the water. Then in the new year Roberto will have results to help decide what would be best for a regular workshop/contest/collab/whatever.
How about for now we do a three week Hardcore Comic Challenge? That way we can adjust accordingly as to whether we need a week more or less. But right now I think we need to âtest the waterâ first and get the ball rolling.
Additional: Just thought that maybe we could have a short-comic WIP section? This would remove constraints such as content, page count and time limits and would bring the comic-scene to CGTalk. Afterall, there are many comic artists here who are professionals - it would be a way to showcase their skillsâŚ
Re: Roberto
Sorry, we are being rather rude. Have a great weekend, mate.
@Boone: lol, ya dude, I suck.
But I can agree with you on one thing, lets just try SOMETHING and then discuss what we have tried afterward. Then we can make any adjustments as you say.

BTW, I am interested in
-WRITING
-PENCILING
-maybe EDITING
Iâve seen a similar comic creation forum thingy set up and running recently and so far it hasnât had too many contributors either so Iâm not sure how this will take off. Itâs more of a comic pages thing instead of a webcomic strip thing though.
Iâm keen to see where you go with this so put me down for:
Hell Iâd love
WRITING
EDITING
PENCILING
Oh and whatâs the difference between INKING and COLOURING?
Inking is doing the outlines (this is an actual skill) and coloring is, well, just that, coloring.
This was from Carina, but anyone whoâs seen the Worst Comments 2 thread knows about the "King of Lightwaveâ. I reckon this would be an awesome idea for a webcomic. :buttrock:
I love Web Comics and this idea can be cool but I feel web comics never really go anywhere especially the more people you get involved.
I have seen a few webcomics really succeed and do well but it is made up of one or no more than 4 dedicated people who have a common goal in mind and know where the story is going.
But the more people you get involved the more kinks in the chain you get. Especially if you have the whole I work on a page and you work on a page and then 3rd month this person works on a page.
To keep interest you need something better than a month update. It would have to be at least a week.
Then you have to setup the right pipeline and really just have one or two writers doing the story line all the way through.
if you are interested here is a link to some fun comics done in the manner in which we speak

Ok Guys I am back from vacationâŚ
I will be cooking this idea a bit further based on your comments.
HOW have I missed this thread?
Basically Iâve attempted to do a webcomic several times, actually. Always either get too ambitious or basically never flesh it out enough. I did, however, do a quick one month run poorly drawn, poorly written, and gaming related so think about the lowest of the low, and you have MY efforts. Well, okay, maybe Chasethehedgehog has me beat in pure suckage. Those interested can just follow the list of links belowâŚ

As you can tell, I was aiming more for speed on these. However, thanks to some feedback Iâve received, I am currently working on a much more focused project (low poly characters in low poly environment⌠essentially a game store strip). Just building up assets for it before it debuts.
As for the comic challenge, YES PLEASE. Iâd say make it a 1-2 page story (set pixel size) and give people the option to keep it black and white. However, rather than dictating the strip on a page per page basis, Iâd say give the challenge a three word theme. For examples
âAgainst the wallâ
âLetâs be friendsâ
âTrying too hardâ
Something like that. It gives a loose enough theme to allow people to embellish on it but also brings the theme together.
Here is why I think we should do this:
Quote from TIME.COM
But the creations of oddball loners like Millar scribbling at drafting tables have also become the movie industryâs most reliable development tool. Thanks to the box-office success of A-list superheroes like Spider-Man and the X-Men, Hollywoodâs appetite for comics-fueled material is insatiable. Titles from the darker corners of the genre, including gritty graphic novels like Wanted and Alan Mooreâs watershed deconstructivist superhero tome Watchmen are getting the big-screen makeover. Stories and characters first written for an audience of a few hundred thousand geeks at most are reaching, at the box office and on DVD and cable, popcorn-chomping crowds that number in the tens of millions.

The only thing about the recent Hollywood interest in Comics is due to the fact that they buy up only the superhero franchises. 300 was the exception but a very lucky one as the other flavour in Hollywood is âTHE WAR IS COMING!â. Not to mention its promise of mindless murder, sex and mayhem and its no wonder it was given the green light. You ask 90% of the audience and they wouldnt even know of its comic origins - hence all the âIts not historically accurateâ critisims.
So in a nutshell, we must make a Superhero comic if we were to succede in the first CGTalk comic-to-movie!:wavey:
I just want the practice⌠and the chicks. According to James OâBarre, you get chicks. Iâm a tragically single fellow whoâs dating pool seems to consist entirely of Yeti and Hobbits. Iâm sure I could get chicks if I drew comics, right? RIGHT?!?
Edited out of respect for the ladies.
Has nobody discussed this with you? UmmmmâŚlisten: This may come asâŚa BIG surprise to youâŚbutâŚ:wip:
