Interested, and have plenty of characters and ideas to work with, but can’t find the time to actually draw it.
Web Comics Roll call: How many of you are interested in doing them?
So Roberto, what was the point of this thread? Seemed like you were going to take it somewhere, but it seems to have gone nowhere.
You guys know me…
I love to push new ideas.
Or in this case take an old idea (we tried this before) and try to make it work.
(and yes I would JOIN this and do one myself)
But before we go on…
A couple of questions:
What can be done to foment this further?
Why do we comic project usually fail?
What can be done?
-R
I have in the past wanted to try my hand at my own basic comic but never really thought about doing a web comic. Obviously its a good idea for exposure and all but what about trying to protect your work? Thats an issue I’ve never been comfortable with but if I had the confidence that my work wouldnt be stolen(in a copyright sense) then sure, I’d give it another thought…
I was just doing my usual lurking and saw this thread.
I do a webcomic in my spare time called On The Edge, I also have ideas for other ones that I’m trying to work on.
But to answer your questions,
I think you have to decide what you want to do exactly and just go for it. Time needs to be set aside to work on a comic, which can be hard to come by with a full time job, but if you’re determined enough it can be done. Get some work together, start a website and advertise like crazy!
I think a webcomic only fails if a person gives up on it. There are tons of comics out there, so it takes time to find an audience. It’s like trying to make a seed grow. But with a popular website (like CGSociety) behind it, it could do very well.
To foment this further? Hmm. Front page plug would help a bunch, though I think that would come a bit further down the line. Keeping this thread going is an immediate way of gaining interest.
Web comics usually fail simply because people can’t keep up with a schedule, I think most don’t realize how time consuming making one comic can be, unless you are a pro. Take Penny Arcade for instance, it simply CAN NOT be done by one person, the genius of the comic is both Mike and Jerry (or rather Gabe and Tycho) working together.
Most simplisticly drawn webcomics make up for their lack of artistic direction with their incredible sense of humour. White Ninja, Cyanide, etc.
Most well drawn comics with story tend to have longer intervals between updates simply because of the time it takes to create one comic.
I think if CG Society, or perhaps just those of us discussing it in this thread were to produce a web comic it would have to be either mini stories (1 to 5 comic stories, ala Calvin & Hobbes) or 1 hit deals. You could actually do both if we were to draw on the community for ideas and art.
For instance, if we had a web comic that was update every Mon, Wed, Fri, then each of those could be done by a seperate artist, you know, everyone takes a turn at drawing a comic with a preset panel alignment.
When we want to do a mini story either someone can do it alone, or collab. When the mini story is done it would go up in place of the 1 hit deal. I think we have enough people here that are interested that most of us would only have to make up a comic once or twice a month (more if you so wanted).
We could have it a rule to keep it cg related as well.
Name the web comic ‘CG Societies’
This would also do much I think to improve upon a lot of folks art as they wouldn’t just be drawing for themselves but would have the added pressure (in a good way) of trying to draw as well as the last artist.
Maybe we could do a HCC(Hardcore Comic Challenge)?:deal:
One month to bang out a single page story that must stick to the theme of that challenge?
It is a good idea, though I personally probably would not participate as I would think I would find it difficult to work on a single page for a whole month, or rather work on one single thing for a whole month.
This is partially why my idea was more random/short term type thing, each artist only has to spend a week or so (maybe less maybe more) on a few panels and bam they are done. Move on, etc.
However those are just my thoughts, the Hardcore Modeling Challenges seem to get pretty good turn outs so this just might as well
I agree with Geta-Ve in that it’ll be hard to maintain interest in the same page after a month. What about something like a one- or two-week challenge? That way, people who want to race ahead and get things done (which should technically be easier than the modeling challenges) will get to do it and they won’t have to wait a couple of weeks if they get done early.
1 or 2 weeks could work.
Not that this is entirely relevant but these guys-
http://www.drawergeeks.com/index.php
-draw about a specific subject every other Friday. Really great images in there and they have been doing it for a few years now.
We could set up something similar to that perhaps?
OR!
How about a chosen script with panels (boxes) already laid out, but each week we take turns filling in each panel, so that by the end of the month/page/what ever we have a completed story that has been drawn by everyone…
shrug I dunno.
Ok how about instead of a whole page we keep the rule to 3 panels (ala Penny Arcade). The challenge could be week long and be held every other week. Maybe even eliminate voting, just do it for fun type thing.
?
Well before a venue can be found I have to justify that this sort of idea can pull its own weight up (thae same way FXWars, Daily Sketch forum and HCr modeling have done.)
So this means that we would have to run challenges for a couple of months, BEFORE I can make a request for a home.
It sounds like a great idea. Maybe if it was made into collaborative projects, like 3 people per team making one page?
BTW guys
I will be traveling all weekend, so keep in mind that my web presence will be lighter than usual.
For those interested in this challenge I would suggest to start posting on this thread WHAT they would like to do…
WRITING.
PENCILS
INKING
COLORING
EDITING
Roberto,
I would also include Modeling to that, you never know if we might use cg elements to raise the value of the art.
