Vue Scale Issues?

#1

I’m hoping someone out there might have some suggestions on how to fix this weird scaling issue in Vue 7.5. I’m exporting .obj files from Maya and importing them into Vue. I have the units set to cm in both. The .obj comes in just fine, and is the correct scale. (My current asset is a mountain type thing and is 38 meters tall.)

The problem is the atmosphere is super tiny. I’ve tried changing the units and the display units to different things, but nothing seems to make much difference. I’m only going to be working with larger and larger scale sets, so this is something I need to get a handle on. I don’t really want to spend most of my workday moving clouds off of the ground plane.

Has anyone had any success with certain settings in Vue that would help alleviate this problem? Scaling the geometry isn’t an option, our assets need to stay at consistent real-world scale.

I can’t be certain, but I don’t think Vue’s atmosphere is physically correct in terms of scale.

That’s what it seems like to me as well. No matter what I’m setting the units to, the atmosphere starts out super tiny. I’ve only been using Vue for a few weeks so I thought maybe I was missing something.

Cloud planes in Vue are exactly as high as you set them in the Sky Editor. If your mountain (the one you mentioned) was 38 meters tall in Vue, and your cloud plane set to say 500 meters, then it would be precisely 462 meters above your mountain at rendertime. Of course that particular cloud plane’s height is also a factor, not just the altitude…

One thing that can help quickly alter your skies to match a scene is the “Aerial Perspective” in the Sky Editor. It’s near the bottom in the Fog/Haze panel. Experiment between 1 and 10, and you should see big differences that help expand the visual scale of your sky (higher numbers) or contract it (1 or less). Sometimes you’ll have a scene with huge distant mountains, but they look more like they’re underwater than simply far away. Adjusting this slider can help a great deal. Hope it helps you!
