Vue questions and rendering 3dmax?

#1

My system is dual quad core 8 gig ram 8 core system, radeon firegl 8650 mod, win 64, 3dmax 2010 (currently just the 32 bit trail ware)

My question is what kind of system do you need to add allot of trees and grass it seems to not like more than just a little but of grass and trees if I try to make anything more I get billboards popping up on all the objects? Do I need an even stronger PC? or what should I do?

also NONE of my trees or grass is rendering at all, the terrain is (i have taht turned on) but the trees and grass will not, and I dont see an option to turn on rendering for that stuff.

Is this a good program? I am pretty new to 3dsMax I need to add some nice scenery to my models.

also I dont see sky or clouds rendering either… I am using the demo versioin…

Check the settings for your ecosystem, Vue defaults to billboards at a set distance. I’m unsure as to how the Xstream version works, but it may also be that you might need the 64bit version of 3DSMAX to fully benefit from your computer. (Or use the Vue Infinite to render the landscape and composite the 3DS render in after).
I’d say that you system is pretty capable of creating dense huge ecosystems, just be aware that significant chunks of Vue are not multithreaded.(I think it’s just the render engine that uses all the processor cores)

Wierd the ecosystem that I painted (some grass around as a test) just wont render. I found a way to turn an individual instance on but the stuff I painted is not on, any ideas? thanks

i check layers, everything the ecosystem should render i dont get it…

im new to 3dsMax is there a setting for this? I have render selected as on in layers…

I wish I could help more but I’m a Cinema 4D guy, however my guess is that you are correct and there’s a setting wrong in Max.

its just crashing all over the place now. I have been doing some reading appearantly this program is very tricky to make stable. this might be what is going on, also I am using 3dMax demo 32 bit in windows 64? I never had a problem running 32 bit programs in 64 but…

In answer to your question about being a good program....I would do some searches on this topic before you spend any significant time with Vue. My opinion is any new version of Vue is not worth your time and is extremely buggy and not production ready in any way, especially for animation. I have been extremely disappointed with Vue 7.5 and e-on software.

There are folks that will disagree with this, but I'd be willing to bet they are not using the latest version, Vue 7.5 xStream and not using it professionally.

ok thanks I got it to render. wow takes forever even on a strong system. render farm time? trick was I had the render selected as scanline, not mentalray, vue i dont think worked dont know about that.

Still crashes like mad though, not sure if it would be worth the $ what do you think?

This is pretty normal for Vue 7.5, tons of crashes, tons of bugs.

No…it’s not worth the money in it’s current state.

I’ve been a professional in vfx industry for a long time, and you are better off using Maya, XSI, Max, or Lightwave and supporting apps like Terragen, Xfrog, etc.

Vue just doesn’t work as they (e-on) says it does.

As a standalone program(infinite and below), it’s nice, the renders are slow but still significantly faster than any equivilent programs(think Terragen 2) and pretty stable. The Xstream version is(and always has been) very buggy and unstable.

Indeed. Although the one thing I would take from Vue is the Ozone plugin. Nothing beats it really. TG2 possibly, but it’s far too slow.
