VRMesh 1.0 – a new style of sketch-based 3D modeling tool


VRMesh is a new style of sketch-based free-form 3D polygonal parametric modeling software. It creates an object directly from a sketched curve, represents the object with a two-manifold triangle mesh, and also provides a bundle of mesh editing tools to modify objects indirectly or directly on the triangle mesh.

VRMesh is an effective design tool for rapid prototyping, industrial design, architecture, entertainment, scientific simulation, and assembly planning – any design field that deals with the articulation of 3D spaces and forms.

Umm. Why does this thing tell me that the demo has expired? Do we get an activation code in our e-mail. Kind of reminds me of an old plugin for Max called “Davince 3D”. Want to check it out though.

Sketch-based free-form 3D modeling is really a cool tool in the 3D related applications, but it is arguably one of the most critical and challenging problems in computer science.

To my knowledge, the available sketch-based free-form modeling methods are separated into three sections: intuitive methods, implicit methods, and explicit methods.

Intuitive methods heuristically inflate the sketched 2D curve into the region surrounded by the 2d curve making wide area fat, and narrow areas thin, e.g., the Teddy is this type of tool, which only creates rotund 3d model.

Implicit methods create a 3D model by fitting variational implicit functions with the depth values, e.g., [color=green]www.merl.com/projects/sketching[/color]


Explicit methods form a 3D model based on parametric functions, which enable more precise control and easy post-modification of surfaces.

VRMesh uses explicit methods to create a 3D model. The default parametric functions in VRMesh are Conic curve, Bezier curve, Circle, and Rectangle. And also, user can draw a parametric curve for a surface. VRMesh characterizes the model with dense parallel profile curves, and represents the model with a two-manifold triangle mesh tiled from the parallel profile curves, e.g. see http://www.vrmesh.com home page.

Beside the advanced 3d sketched curve recognizing technique, VRMesh has many unique 3D modeling features:

Complex Form - creates objects from a shape curve with analysis of the shape curve topology.
Simple Form - creates an object from a shape curve without analysis of the shape curve topology.
Lift Form - creates an object by lifting a shape curve.
Clip With Contour - clips an object with a sketched curve on its surface.
Fillet With Subdivision - creates an object by connecting two objects with a subdivision surface.
Profile Curve Edit - a bundle of commands used to modify surfaces, including insert, delete, replace, skin, and flex.
Crease - creases along a sketched curve path on surface with subdivision control.
