Well in any file/image nodes you can simply add the vray gamma attribute and it will set the colorspace for you.
What is ultimately tricky is that the color picker can become a little bit of a guesswork in that 100% saturated red is the same in both linear and Srgb. Remember the curve begins and ends in the same spot its only the gamma curve through the middle that makes the offset.
To tell you the truth I have never used Maya’s color management to compensate for the color picker offset in the 2,2 gamma space regardless if its Renderman, Mental ray or Vray.
Though at Digital Domain we created a Srgb color picker so that it will grab the color you actually pick and offset the amount divided by .4545. The color appears darker then the one you picked on the color wheel because the picker calculates how to get your target color in linear space in compensation for ending up in Srgb space.
Maya should just have a right click menu for this on the color picker or a basic checkbox “adjust for Srgb”.
Again I think there is probably a whole set of preferences for this but I am used to the methods before it was built in to mental ray and Vray. Renderman always had “IT” to view in proper space anyways.
