I just wondered if you guys had seen this very good explanation of the portal light/sun/sky:

http://download.autodesk.com/us/maya/2009help/mr/shaders/architectural/arch_sunsky.html#Sky Portals

Its about half way down the page. It uses a room scene as an example.

oh sorry, I only just discovered it

Been following this thread for a bit. I’m working on an indoor scene with physical sky/sun and exposure_photographic. I’ve recently been doing a bunch of learning with gamma, and be getting some good results. But my concern is that the renders, while more saturated, have quite increased contrast. Was wondering if there was a way to step back the contrast.

Its a snowy scene outside and was enjoying the incorrect gamma setup renders before b/c it provided a very neutral soft lighting.

scene:
physcial sky/sun with exposure_photographic, gamma 1
framebuffer gamma, .455
mia_portal light

any help would be greatly appreciated

#2206

If you don’t want to much contrast, try to lower the burn highlights and crush blacks.

#2207

thanks hamburgertrain. didnt have any burnt highlights on but dropping down the default crush blacks has helped.

when applying gamma correct nodes for a linear workflow, some of my textures become over saturated. I will admit that i dont know much about gamma correct nodes and went with a mel script at http://toi.bk.tudelft.nl/?module=meldb to automatically configure nodes for all textures that need it in the scene. They are all configured at .455

#2208

Hi all…i’m a newbie here…this is my work…an interior scene done it on MAYA 2009 and MENTAL RAY 3.7 and lil bit touch up on photoshop cs.

#2209

mind if i ask how was the carpet done? it’s very nice doesnt seem like displacements, extruded curves? pfx?

#2210

TANKQ - great looking render. There are a few things that I myself may have done a little differently with certain indoor lights that you used (this is just my humble opinion though) but all in all a fantastic and very realistic render.

Would you mind sharing your workflow for the light setup and or settings. This thread is kind of dedicated to see how Maya 2009 MR is performing. Would be great to see how you got this look and perhaps compare with the others posted in this thread.

Cheers
Pat

#2211

I also enjoy that render, TANKQ, although I find the carpet a bit ridiculous in fiber scale! Still, it does look cool.

And most importantly, this render of yours really bridges the gap between realism and photorealism. No more unnecessarily blown-out windows which just seem to “glow”. I really like the lighting here, great work!

Feel free to share more of your workflow or any barriers you ran into, which you obviously overcame?

#2212

it looks like maya fur :stuck_out_tongue:

#2213

Hi all…tankq very much for the reply.

@ Gal: No…that’s not a displacement…it’s maya fur. i used Llama fur.

@ pmoreira: tankq very much for the feed back. yeah…everyone has they own setting and taste…so that’s why has different of styles rendering and looks. actually, me still learning maya. so, i think still need lot of improvements. hehehe…

@ InfernalDarkness: tankq very much bro for your support. hehehe…really nice to heard your comments.

@ bugzor: you’re right dude. i used maya fur, Llama

for the Llama fur setting: i just changed the DENSITY to 10000 and GLOBAL SCALE to 0.07 and changed the BASE and TIP COLOR to you’re like. that’s all…it’s so simple to set it all bro.
lot of people has told me and asked me about that fur and i just share my setting like that, lot of people also don’t belive in me. wakakakka…it’s true…the setting of the carpet is really simple, but it’s cool…try it bro…u’ll luv it.

#2214

Hi everyone…here’s my newest works…it’s a conceptual works…made with MAYA 2009, MENTAL RAY 3.7 and postpro on PHOTOSHOP CS.
for the full of angles and other of works, i let you all to visit my blog… http://tankq77.deviantart.com/

#2215

TANKQ Wow more impressive renders. In particular I think the Master Bedroom is fantastic! and I really dig your purple feature wall in Loft Living Room.

I do some architectural design work and would love to know what settings you have used in mentalray for these renders and how you setup your light rig.

Would you be able to provide some settings listed here for me and perhaps some of the other guys interested in the same area of maya to learn from?

By the way if looks like your skills in maya are well developed thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!

Cheers
Patrick Moreira

#2216

@ pmoreira: many thanks for the compliment bro.
actually for these works i only used DIRECTIONAL LIGHT for the sun lighting, and MIA_PORTAL LIGHT for the Global illumination from the wide window (for the living room) and plus VOLUME LIGHT for the side or standing lamp at the master bedroom. the setting is so simple too. nothing special. used AREA LIGHT then scroll to search MENTAL RAY TAB>CUSTOM SHADERS>LIGHT SHADER fill with MIA_PORTAL LIGHT>PHOTON EMITTER>fill with MIA_PORTAL LIGHT too. The mia_portal light, i setted the INTESITY MULTIPLY to 35 (depend to the condition of the room, different wide room, different adjust).
Trying to set Global Illumination, Raytracing, Ambient Occlusion, Final Gather on mental ray, also used PHYSICAL SUN and SKY.That’s all pal.

#2217

Thanx Visua.

I could not find the same settings in Maya until I installed ctrl_Ghost_Settings. Pretty Neat!

#2220

Hey everyone. first major post here. Been working on this sucker for a while. I have a new found respect for people who specialize in shading and texturing and rendering, i mainly model, so this was a rough one!

thanks to all the helpful comments in this thread!! looks pretty great on my monitor at home, extremely dark at work. hopefully its just a monitor thing
