VRay-like interior renders with mental ray???

#1981

I don’t really know sorry, I think it’s hard to find the ‘right’ value without some sort of digital light meter. I don’t think it really matters too much, just set it to 5000 or something so that the scene is visible.

Can somone post the test-scenes (that have been posted earlier in this thread) in a single post, with working links? That would be great. I (and a guess a few more people) would really like to test some techniques discussed in the post.

I’m working on an archviz interior in maya/mental ray, that I have to say that this post has helped me out a LOT! Thanks everyone for this… However I would like to perfect my skill with various scenes and scales…

Thanks in advance! / Anders

one of this scenes from that cuni and visua show so perfect images.
But I think its their know how and they will keep it

indeed, a step by step walkthrough on how to setup those darn portal lights would be a huge help for me!!!
ie; create area light/click on portal light/click on mib black body conennect that to etc etc etc…
I know ,of course, that these lighting setups are all dependant on the scene scale and geo etc etc

if somone could show a dummy like me how this is achieved! as i use renderman mainly, but i’m loving these renders u guys are getting from Mr

Take a look at the Maya 2008 feature video: http://download.autodesk.com/us/maya/videos/7_mk8_web_Render_2.mov
There is a part that covers portal lights and their setup.

great thanks

when using the portal light I get this error message:

PHEN 0.4 error: Shader ‘mia_portal_light’: Light direction must be 0 0 z

anyone?

sry for asking…found a solution here:

Well, all I’m after is the geometry. Like the classroom and the bedroom etc.

Oh, well. Guess it’s a hassle collecting them all and posting. Would be very grateful though…

#1990

ace. this approach kinda works with exterior renders too.

#1991

when using the portal light the quality really improves a lot but suddenly I need a lot more fgrays and it takes a LOT more time to render.
And in the corners of my room Im getting really aliased edges…even when I turn up the samples to min:1 max:2 its all “steppy”
dont think its about the photons I tried calculating a lot more photons and increasing the accuracy to a really HIGH value - nothing really happens, except of the rendertime

Am I doing something wrong?
and am I supposed to turn “emit photons” on, on the area portal lights, too?

thx

I know it’s not an interior, but once again Mr Patton has inspired me:

#1993

Rendertime 10 m 0 s, but I could probably get it down to around 6 with some tweaking:

wow visua.you should make a tutorial

Happy, to stumble upon this massive post, but, at the same time, jealous of all the people who are getting the hang of Mental Ray.

I have spent three days (only), which feels like eternity, playing with settings and learning about all the variables.

Right now, I’m in MAYA, with one spot light spitting out photons, an HDR image, GI, and caustics. I have adjusted every number and examined the results.

I have ran in circles with this but have learned SO MUCH. cant wait to one day get a good render. cough :surprised

this is where I am:

any initial tips? Its a bit overwhelming but the learning is coming.
anyone up for checking out a zipped scene file?

#1996

nice!
any chance of posting the scene file so I can take a peek at your lighting setup?

#1997

this scene from visua,…

#1998

Oh jozvex, I never think u bump into this thing, I have raise topic here also and all say let this parameter alone :D, some kind of photometric exact in Maya cant be done

Hey, I have a question for you guys:

Where the hell is the BSP2 thing?, I mean, if I select the miRenderGlobals window and change the BSP acceleration method to BSP2 (in service pack 2, but it’s found also in the first 2008 version), then in the render globals window, I see the BSP option has been changed to hierarchy grid…, Is this correct?.

Thank’s.

#2000

I second that!

It would be great if people started posting more scene files. That’s the best way to learn in my opinion, specially from great renderings like that.
