Anyone using Vray in Rhino?..if so, how’s it feel and work?
Is it a stripped down version or do you get the full deal as found in Max?
Thanks.

Well, I was able to find the demo of Vray for Rhino and it seemed to be fairly complete though a little ‘numeric’ as far as interface goes.
I also found the Brazil WIP which I really have enjoyed trying out. Very similar to how it behaves in Max and produces good results even though many aspects aren’t hooked up yet and there are a few issues.
Here’re a few render tests wth Brazil for Rhino:
Yeah I have just started ussing Vray on a model of mine:
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=174&t=487741
I’m not sure how complete the software is to other releases because I have only ever used Vray in Rhino, but you should find the other infor here: http://www.asgvis.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=39&Itemid=1
Also on that site is several great tutorials… such as this: http://www.asgvis.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=57
It seems like a great package… excellent because it renders NURBS surfaces so no fiddling with mesh settings and other packages for simple (and hopefully complex) renders. But I have only just started ussing it. I will post up additional renders on that Fredrick thread when I do them. Hopefully by the end of this week if I have time.
And please post yours
Cool house!
Yes, I had seen the tutorial but haven’t spent much time there - got sidetracked onto Brazil for Rhino.
There is reference to downloading the “Starter Kit” right at the begining of the tutorial but I can’t find a download link anywhere. Did you find one? I’d really like to get that as I’m sure it would make getting started much easier.
By the way, how do you get lights, which cast shadows when using Rhino’s native render, to cast shadows when using Vray? It’s got to be something really simple but is escaping me:-) I looked to see if there is a special light Vray has but can’t find one and can’t find the ‘light properties’ to turn things on, as the regular controls in the Rhino object and light properties aren’t doing it.
I am sure liking Rhino 4!
Any object can emit light via the texture>emmisive layer which you have to create/activate/add on a layer of your a material. The usual lights are available …try a rectangular light.
Hey guys,
I’m actually one of the folks over at ASGvis that made the V-Ray for Rhino plugin. Just to give you guys a heads up, we just released versions of V-Ray for Rhino 3 and 4, as well as Sketchup 5 and 6 (and yes it works with the free version of sketchup from google as well http://sketchup.google.com/).
Materials:
We’re also going to release a plugin for Max that will let you export V-Ray materials from the rather extensive V-Ray material library for Max (you can find some materials at http://www.vray-materials.de/all_materials.php, but so far they’re only going to work with max. So once we release that converter, you’ll be able to convert to the new .vismat format, which will work on any version of V-Ray that we develop, instead of just one app or another. We may even have some sort of material creation competition with prizes, so we can start to build up a library of .vismat materials for everyone. If we decide to have a competition like that, I’ll be sure to post something about it on here.
Tutorials:
Now as far as tutorials go, we’re also going to be releasing a manual and some help docs to help you guys out (should be released soon, just hang in there a lil longer if you can). You can find some on our site at http://www.asgvis.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=90&topic=611.0 as well as at the link that tilite mentioned earlier (http://www.asgvis.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=57)
Questions:
If any of you guys have any questions, we’ve got the answers rattling around somewhere in our heads, but to be honest, a lot of setting/workflow questions can be answered even faster, and possibly in a more understandable manner, if you just post it on our forums. We have a great user base that’s really quite talented and helpful. Just head on over to http://www.asgvis.com/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=92 and let us know what you need help with. We’ll be more than glad to help!
I try to browse around on as many forums as I can to find anyone that might need some help with our product, but it’s hard to keep track of everyone when they’re scattered all over the web, so our forum really is the best place to get your questions answered about V-Ray for Rhino or Sketchup.

Actually it doesn’t render NURBS surfaces, only the render meshes of those NURBS surfaces. So you still have to mess with the mesh settings (within Rhino) in order to get good quality renders.
Here are some of my WIP test renders, done with VRay. Still incomplete though.

Devin welcome to the cgtalk forums
The reason your posts weren’t displaying was because a mod had to check for first few for spam reasons. You should be fine from here on in.
Strange you pop up today I was actually trying to convince the Dean of Architecture and Melbourne Uni to get Vray in Sketchup yesterday…
But back to the topic at hand.
Thanks Snexc I should have realized I remember adjusting the mesh setting previously ![]()
PostScript:
The material plug-in you guys are working on is a great idea… it’s just to limiting in Rhino. Glad you realized
tilite- Thanks for the warm welcome! I’ve been lurking around for a long time, just never had much to say until now.
I had seen a few notices about moderating posts, but when I posted, I didn’t notice any explicit message saying that post was going to be reviewed, so I figured that our IT guy needed to get strangled again. Glad to see that I won’t need to bother him again, haha.
As far as Sketchup goes, he should be able to get a V-Ray demo from our site (he’ll need to register and log in first though), play around with it some, and then the decision should be easy.
The main goal is to make V-Ray as universal as possible, so we’re developing ways to make materials and settings portable from one version of V-Ray to another. There should be some rather exciting things down the road, but for now, the material converter will just convert basic V-Ray materials.
I’ll keep you guys posted on future development, and as always, please don’t hesitate to contact us on our forum with any questions you have.
I have a little suggestion which will help others I am sure.
I am not new to 3d but also certainly don’t know everything there is to know…my intitial experience with Vray4Rhino was terrible.
I’d used Vray free-version awhile back and found it easy to use but the version for Rhino just killed any enthusiasm I had for the sorftware.
As a priority, provide some Rhino example scenes which render really fast and show-off Vray’s features …also a few which show off the features but take what-ever render hit they require - and some great materials. I know you probably have these in the works but if the initial ‘first date’ is too awkward…there is no second date.
I was ready to unistall the demo and move on…you posting here, saying there is stuff in the works, has made me hesitate.
Just try to make the first impression a pleasant one - even though someone suggested how to do it, embarassingly, I still can’t get a spot light to cast a shadow and it show up in a Vray render.
Using absolute vray general /generic startup settings (.irradiance map+quasi monti carlo.) and a spotlight you will get shadows if …
I am guessing here but you may be missing the fact that the light/object properties box has a dropdown list…just one of the peeves i have about rhinov3.
Yes, you would think it should be that simple and I have tried that repeatedly - even saving out the project and re-opening it. Even tried disabling hidden and default lights.
I have a feeling this is just an issue with the demo. I have read of other problems people have experienced with the demo…and I’m assuming you are not using the demo.
Everything I try works fine in native Rhino render mode but once in Vray the only light possible is the default one and it is casting shadows irregardless of what I try. This was why I had initially assumed there had to be a Vray light, which when added to the scene would by-pass the default and produce it’s own illumination.
The GI works fine.
…and to add/reply to your edit. F3 brings up the object/light properties and all relevant boxes are checked. This has to be a demo problem - no render could be this arcane to get a light to cast shadows:-).
PaulS2- Yes, unfortunately as of right now, there isn’t a whole lot that comes with the plugin that explains how to use it. All of the reference materials that we offer at this point, should be available on our site. Not to say that this the way that we want it, it’s just how it is at the moment. I completely understand what you mean by “the initial ‘first date’ is too awkward” and we’re working on making the learning curve less of an issue.
As far as your issue goes, I’m not really sure exactly what is going on, but if it is a bug, it helps a great deal for us to have a copy of the scene that has the problem. If nothing else, a render or screen shot would help. And again, the best place to get that question answered is on our forum. Right now there’s 8062 Members on our forum, and every single one of them is using V-Ray for either Rhino or Sketchup. If it can’t be answered there, I’m not sure where it could be answered.
If I do come across a solution, I’ll be sure to pass it along though. From me just playing around for a while, I found that pumping up the multiplier on the spotlight helps, but again, without seeing what you’re working with, it’s hard for me to recreate and diagnose the issue.
Well crap this sucks.sorry paul.-i understand your frustration.- though it does works.I hope this comes out okay in the demo eventually because it is going to turn off a lot of peoples.
Arachnode !! I understand you are on the porting of a max materials to vray 'converter…any hint as to a timeline on this.:):)
email me at sherstobitof@earthlink.net and I’ll send you a scene…also maybe you can send me a simple one you ‘know’ works.
