VRay 3 Depth of Field Subdivisions?

I’m learning VRay and the tutorial I’m watching, in a slightly older version, can increase subdivisions on the DOF for a smoother result.
It’s no longer located in physical camera settings, and I’m wondering where it is or what I can do to get the same result.
The only other posts I can find on this have been archived and I can’t reply to revive the search… the only other person asking this question just gave up after the first reply.
Anyone have any ideas?

I believe the number of samples that are used for the DOF is controlled by the Image Sampler in the VRay render settings. If you’re using Adaptive Subdivision, you can adjust the Min rate, Max rate and Threshold to make the DOF smoother.

Ah damn, so can’t do those separately any more? My AA is already smooth…
I didn’t want to have to bump it up further, what a bummer, that will massively increase render times in unnecessary ways… surely they can’t have forced that in the new version… I mean hell, that would be a terrible decision, effectively rendering DOF unusable… =/

Have you tried it with 0 subdivs Mult Vlado suggested? I haven’t used it in production myself, maybe doing it that way wouldn’t take too long?

Oh yes, I tried turning the subdivs down to 0 without a subdiv option :smiley:
And I have no idea what a Mult Vlado is. Neither does Google.

Vlado’s V-ray creator. He posted a new method of cleaning up noises for V-ray 3.1 and above, which we do not need to dive down into individual lights/shaders anymore.

Motion blur and depth of field tho don’t seem to get clean up and we need to crank the threshold pretty low for those 2.

We will be adding the variance-based sampling for the next service pack, which should solve this problem. If want to try it now, we can get you access to the nightly builds.

Yeah I did notice that today. I use 3.1 very similarly to the way I used 2.4. I tune the shaders/lights/DoF/Mblur separately and then use the AA engine sparingly.

I’ll be quite happy to have them opened back up again.
