I can only vote 5 stars - no other options visible. 5 or nothing. Using Firefox.
voting bug?
It’s not a bug. We’ve changed it. The stars should be there to bring attention to excellence, otherwise they should be left alone. People keep abusing the system because of their own shallow, pathetic lives, so we’ve changed it.
so if one person likes an image and gives it a 5-star vote is that thread suddenly a 5 star thread forever destined to be 5 stars?
No, if an {unspecified number} of users vote 5 stars, then a thread becomes a 5 star thread.
I would say that previous voting system worked rather well… But I see your point and partly agree with it.
On the other hand, before I was able to browse through 3d stills forum viewing ONLY **** works, finding gems like http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=132&t=670783 that haven’t somehow made front page. And it was working well enough, most 4* works are interesting, and rest usually not worth watching… I’m afraid I won’t be able to do that anymore.
I would have thought that lowering the 5 star threshold from an average of 4.5 down to 4.25 would have made it easier to separate the “4 star very goods but not inspirational” from the “should be 5 star, wow thats amazing” pieces.
But i suppose this will work as well.
I used the star method for browsing too…I don’t mind this, though. I’ll just use the number of viewings as a guide;-)
first time i’ve said that it was a bug.but the real bugs are those voters…
i like this new “feature”

One limitation I would see with the new system is that once someone got his 5 stars (and from what I see you don’t need many votes), then it will remain like this. In other words, someone who had (let’s put a random number here) 10 of his friends vote for him, will get the stars no matter what the other 500+ people who viewed the piece thought of it.
I understand people may have abused of the old system in a negative way, but the exact opposite might happen here.
Just my 2 cents.
Cheers
P.
Ok, I understand this.
I followed very closely the voting of the brilliant thread “Farnsworth House” by Marla S, and it had a rock solid 5 star standing (4.75) after about 70-80 votes. Then all of a sudden there came in like 10-20 votes with probably only 1 star, that changed the rank totally and brought it down way below 4. It was almost like it was done by onhe person with a lot of accounts…
I like the new system .- I finally have a 4 stars thread!
Any system that we develop is going to be exploited by users.
Unfortunately, that’s the only constant in the rating system.
Yea. I understand why it was changed, I just don’t understand why it was changed to what it is now.
It’s not a bug. We’ve changed it. The stars should be there to bring attention to excellence, otherwise they should be left alone. People keep abusing the system because of their own shallow, pathetic lives, so we’ve changed it.
I mean, 4 and 5 star threads always got my attention and were almost always excellent in the old system. 3 star threads were generally average/good and I was happy to get rated 3 stars on any of my works, and then there were 1-2 stars which were poor, or poser or something, and I could easily avoid looking at any of it.
Now I guess good work will be lumped with the crappy work or poser work and at the same time threads that would’ve gotten 2 stars in the old system are getting five as long as someone has enough accounts or friends (see the link I posted above).
Leigh, I appreciate your cynical power-whiner attitude but I think the new system really will pose as many problems as it was intended to fix. Right off the get-go I have noticed half the threads with 4-5 stars are of much lower standard than in the old system, and I am missing a lot of great work because it has nothing.
I am going to return to my shallow pathetic life now , : p
[size=2]I do agree that any system will be exploited regardless so I guess overall I am for the new system - yay for change! I hope it turns out well.

There may have to be a few adjustments made to numbers on the back end so that really popular work shine over the “my friends are helping me pad the numbers” work. It’s a work in progress. Hang in there.
Or if you go for a ‘‘Rate 5 stars or 0’’ system maybe you could go for a ''Flag as FRONT PAGE MATERIAL ‘’ or ‘‘Flag as PURE THREAD OF AWESOMENESS’’ button.
The ‘‘Rating’’ with only ‘‘5 Stars’’ as an opion misleads us into thinking that this is a bug…
I sometime wish there was a ‘‘Flag as PLEASE PLUG’’ option
You don’t think that everyone would suddenly find all their own work submitted to be worthy of “Flag as FRONT PAGE MATERIAL” or “Flag as PURE THREAD OF AWESOMENESS”?
Yes but of course you would need something like a 60%+ ‘‘Flag as awesomenes’’ among the users which replied to the thread or something like that.
Anyway I have faith in the CGTalk crew to come up with something cool
maybe it would help if accounts could only vote if they have 50 posts or more. Then pretty much only real active accounts can vote. That thread BenCole showed was ridiculous.
