I don’t want to do toon renders either. They aren’t terribly pleasing, to my eye anyway.

and then later-

I like the idea of toon rendering for the animation contest.

I would hope that if someone wanted and could make the toon render work really well they’d enter. It has always been one of AMs better points.

Jim redeemed himself with this general warning-

I would advise against blatantly depicting any Disney character or elements. Their lawyers can be nasty.

but as Disney never created the 8th dwarf either they’d have a hard job sueing (is that right spelling?)

hoochoochoochoo,

Ha! What I wrote sure sounds contradictory, but I meant that stills rendered in toon style were lacking in pleasing quality to my eye. I have nothing against the flat colors of the toon renderer. I don’t like the line quality. Hand drawn lines are much more pleasing to look at. In an animation the lines are always moving and less noticable. I do think toon rendered animations are very effective and read easily and so I support that use of the toon renderer.

Did I dig myself out of this hole yet?

No - “itsjustme”, I’m not cruising for a bruising. I tend to let my “humour” have its run. Only ever lost my temper once at someone on this forum and unfortunately yves doesn’t post here much anymore. I am sorry about that as I still respect what he’s done for AM users.

hoochoochoochoo - You don’t have to feel sorry about that episode. At the time this happened, the A:M CgTalk forum was tinted with a heavy negative tone and I was quite already turned off by it. Your post just was the drop that made the spill while I was trying to help but it was nevertheless just another drop. No more. I didn’t keep any grief against you.

When I come here to read the different topics, I tend to just skip any entire topics which starts in a bashing tone or just give-up at a point where a topic turns out negatively. Since I’m pretty busy and I don’t need more stress in my life, I usually just close the browser and go work on something else.

I am very pleased to see that this whole “contest” topic have started on a very positive tone and have keept it since.

I wish all the best to this initiative. Bravo Wegg for initiating it. I’m currently up to my ears with bugging projects unrelated to 3D right now so I won’t be able to participate in the contest but I will come and see what’s going on.

Jim

You can fake line weight by using the 2 tone with line preset and placing a light at your camera origin, slightly offset - the lines between the tones appear only along the contours of the model adding variation to the linework.

Here’s an example:

Model’s a bit rough, but I was only playing around… (SHH, it’s a D@sney character, please don’t sue me!!)

I ONLY do toon renders… well, 99% of the time…

that’s a really cool idea Bugle, I’m going to try that for myself. I wonder if you tried changing the lights settings and position- would that vary and add randomness to the line strength?

What a great forum this is, picked up a greater proportion of tips and tricks here than 5 yrs on the AMList.
