!!!Vote for Image Contest Topic!!!

There was an image once poster in Hash contest of a harlequin (if I remember correctly), that was just a painting by someone else. It was actually on the cover of some role playing book. The image looked real nice, but of course got kicked from the contest as it was not made by the guy who posted it and it was not made in AM or 3D for that matter. I don’t think we’ll have problems like that here, at least not with the WIP posts.

If the Contest topic is “Eighth Dwarf” or any biped, then I would suggest that we use the 2001 rig included on the CD. There are step by step rigging instructions in the slim manual. And since we are agreeing to give the model to the community, it would be a boon to newbies to be able to make use of the reusable actions that are available on the Hash website.

Nothing against any other popular rigs  The one on the CD is a combination of Eggington’s and Raf’s and is really easy to animate with and to add to your model…

Has anyone posted this thread to the A:M list so that we can get more participants? Not everyone knows about this forum since the list population changes frequently… I will mention it tonight on the Wednesday night chat, but that’s usually only a dozen or so people…

#46

That would be great if it were mentioned on the list zandoria but I believe in the rules that you agreed too when joining the list states that you cannot promote any other lists or groups on the list. Don’t quite know how you would get around that but. . . your more than welcome to give it a go.

#47

Isn’t today the AM irc chat? Maybe mention it on there.

You could also try emailing Steve and asking if you can post it. They’ve mentioned other contests in the past. Chances are he won’t go for it, since they already do a monthly contest, but it couldn’t hurt.

There is a modeling/Animation contest for Animation:Master starting up over
on CGTalk. Voting for the topic is underway:

After the modeling portion of the contest is over, the winning model is
going to be made available to the community for the animation part of the
contest (Meaning that if you win, you will agree to make the model
available).
Once the topic is announced, entrants will have to start a thread and post
their concept sketches and work-in-progress for feedback on the forum.

This contest is not a Hash sponsored event, it is separate from the Hash
monthly image/animation contests. The A:M Forum moderators and other
Community members have initiated it. If you would like to participate,
follow the above link and join in.

please excuse the rule violation,
I would just like to see everyone who uses A:M to have a chance to
participate

Well said.

You probably could have mentioned the AMAZING prizes donated by David Rojers and I. . . but well said.

Booyah, well posted Zandoria!

Maybe we could get other sponsers to kick-in prizes if this contest is succesful. Free publicity for your A:M related merchandise, goodwill, etc. :lightbulb

I’m looking forward to this contest, I think it could signal a more positive direction for this community…

On the issue of the background, what about a common set from the A:M CD, like the little backstage scene?
But if you were making the “Eight Dwarf” wouldn’t you want a toon shaded character rotoscoped into one of the background paintings from Snow White?

I guess it will all depend on the topic…Speaking of which, why not plan to use ALL of the ideas over the course of several months? Lets assume that the contest will be a success!:buttrock:

I was thinking we would just introduce a new topic each month and include the other four that didn’t get picked last time. . .

I don’t think we should do “toon”. It just doen’t show off the model at all.

I was thinking of building the set as my contribution to all of this. . . Put it for sale on eggprops for those who don’t want to enter and give it to those who have entered the contest. Eggprops has a nice interface for downloading updated revisions of items so its as good a place as any.

Any objections?

I’ll put up a $50 Amazon gift certificate to the winner. If I win, it will go towards the 2nd place person.

As a precaution, I would advise against blatantly depicting any Disney character or elements. Their lawyers can be nasty.

I don’t want to do toon renders either. They aren’t terribly pleasing, to my eye anyway.

It’s fine by me if you want to do all that, Wegg, but you better be taking part in the contest, too.

I’ll try.

I posted before that I think the other topics should be used in the future, so i still go for that idea.

I guess we could go with using the rig on the CD (even though I suck at rigging). It’s a pretty good rig so it shouldn’t be too hard to set up (I hope).

I also agree that we shouldn’t put any blatant disney characters into either the sets, backgrounds, or even the characters we make ourselves. At least don’t make them look too much like a Disney Seven Dwarves.

#57

No one is making any money on this. . . As long as you don’t making screen grabs of the film and mapping them onto a plane. . . I think you should be safe.

#58

I don’t see how you could interpret the “eighth dwarf” and do it in a style completely different from Disney. If it didn’t seem to belong with the other seven, then how would you approach the subject?
There are Looney Tunes characters and Hanna Barbara characters done in A:M, not to mention Buzz Lightyear… And since the entry will get donated to the community, I don’t see how this topic would be any different…

If Movie Monsters, then how well the movie monster in question is interpreted in A:M has to be a criterion for judging the model. IMHO:shrug:

Maybe the toon render can be used in the animation portion of the contest, since the model will be already judged.

#59

Oh, I think you almost have to model the character to be similar to Disney’s style. I just wanted everyone to be aware enough not to actually match any Disney characters or Disney enviroments. We’re probably all envisioning the characters to be similar to Disney’s, let’s not get too close.

I like the idea of toon rendering for the animation contest.

#60

I just meant not to model one – if it is the eighth dwarf topic we do  – that looks nearly identical to one of the other dwarves. I agree that there is nothing wrong with them looking similar. Mine will probably look as similar as I can get it (which probably won’t be that close, haha).

#61

I don’t want to do toon renders either. They aren’t terribly pleasing, to my eye anyway.

and then later-

I like the idea of toon rendering for the animation contest.

I would hope that if someone wanted and could make the toon render work really well they’d enter. It has always been one of AMs better points.

Jim redeemed himself with this general warning-

I would advise against blatantly depicting any Disney character or elements. Their lawyers can be nasty.

but as Disney never created the 8th dwarf either they’d have a hard job sueing (is that right spelling?)

hoochoochoochoo,

Ha! What I wrote sure sounds contradictory, but I meant that stills rendered in toon style were lacking in pleasing quality to my eye. I have nothing against the flat colors of the toon renderer. I don’t like the line quality. Hand drawn lines are much more pleasing to look at. In an animation the lines are always moving and less noticable. I do think toon rendered animations are very effective and read easily and so I support that use of the toon renderer.

Did I dig myself out of this hole yet?
