Volumetric Lighting (light rays, god rays, light scatter)

Ok, so I tried out the Underwater scene that is linked to the bottom of this tutorial.

It looks really good in the render but I need to get whats going on in the Light rig working with my Spotlight in Mental Ray.

I thought if I selected the light in the MayaUnderwaterRays and checked its input and output connections in Hypershade I could understand whats going on. So I could see that the Ocean1 shader was connected to Lambert1 and also the Spotlights color channel.

So I thought if I connected the Ocean1 shader into my Mental Ray scene’s Spotlight color channel then it would render with the underwater rays but it just comes out black again. It must be something to do with the values coming out of the Ocean1 Shader. I also tried connecting the Ocean1 shader to the color channel of physical light I have linked to my spotlight. Still nothing.

Does anyone have any idea how to get the MayaUnderwaterRays lighting setup working with the Mental Ray parti volume setup I just got working in the previous posts?
