I’m using volume lights on a night shot of a car driving towards camera. Volume lights don’t render when pointing straight at the camera. How can I get around this…do you guys do all of your volume light fx in post?

How are you setting up your volumetrics? There are several ways in XSI, and they can produce different effects etc.
Try applying the volumetric material to an object (like a box) that encases the area where you need it. That is just one way that works…or are you doing a simulation with ICE particles?
Here is a basic scene (not saying everything is peachy with the volume shader settings) that shows volume lights working with a spot pointed directly at the camera at frame 30.
