Video Cards!

#1

Hi,

Is there an offical PMG list of video cards that work with Messiah? I’m interested in getting an nVidia Quadro 4500 but don’t want to fork out all that cash just to find that messiah doesn’t like it!

Does messiah support Open GL 2?

I’ve never seen a list, but the website does list nVidia as the preferred vendor. According to the website, it requires Open GL 1.2.

According to OpenGL’s website, backwards compatibility is a requirement, so I would imagine it would work. OpenGL: Backward compatibility requirements ensure that existing applications do not become obsolete.

BTW, when I first ran Messiah, it ran kind of weird. I couldn’t read any of the active text boxes in my input fields. So, if I wanted to rename a bone to MyBone_ArmR, I could TYPE it, but I couldn’t read it until I exited the field.

Then I changed my OpenGL settings “Force Z-Buffer depth” setting to “Force 16 bit” and now it works fine. Dunno if that matters to anyone… but FWIW.

======================
From the PMG Website FAQ:

What are the system requirements?
Operating System: Windows XP (recommended; also runs on Windows 2000)
CPU: 1ghz or higher AMD or Intel
RAM: 512mb or higher
Hard Drive Space:100 megabytes
USB Port (for hardware dongle)
Graphics Card: NVidia is recommended, but ATI now works well too. The card must fully support OpenGL 1.2 at the bit depth and resolution you are working at. Some of the lower end cards (in the US$50 price range) only really support OpenGL at resolutions below 1024x768

Hey thanks for that. Yeah, I’m a little nervous because whenI first started using messiah I had some issues with my gfx card. It was quickly resolved by an email to PMG who said what bit’s to turn on and off on the card settings. It would just be rather gutting to get a super cool gfx card to find that one of my main apps doesn’t like it!

Anyone got an nVidia Quadro 4500?

I’d recommend searching the yahoo list as well as here. THere have been some in-depth threads about it…

here collected comments about how to get around card problems:
-“i turned off anitialiasing as well as the v sync and changed the buffer flipping to block transfer” - solved a display problem

- "In the graphics driver, set all of the “custom settings” to highest quality and then set the "compatibility setting: Z-buffer depth to “force 16 bit”

- “use unified back / depth buffer” (this was on an nVidia card)

Oooh sounds ominous! Have you tried all the setting changes as per the various thread (I think there have been a couple or so. I’d like to hear how you get on. Also, what version of the driver are you using? You could try updating?

Kick it?

But seriously. You tried these:

-“i turned off anitialiasing as well as the v sync and changed the buffer flipping to block transfer” - solved a display problem

- "In the graphics driver, set all of the “custom settings” to highest quality and then set the "compatibility setting: Z-buffer depth to “force 16 bit”

- “use unified back / depth buffer” (this was on an nVidia card)

I have an ATI, but I’d love to help you out, since I finally got mine up and working after some stressing. And I understand the irritation you are likely experiencing.

i believe i have tried every suggestion i’ve read here and at yahoo groups, and probably also tried any possible combination of settings.
my actual driver is ForceWare version: 81.67

sure.

thank you DMack and Nichod for tryng to help, much appreciated.
i hope that someone will do a list of messiah:studio certified graphic cards and drivers soon.
it would help many users and pmG too.

i know of a few users that have already abandoned or never started because of display problems in the past, of course bigger problems, i’m sure they’ll come back.

I couldn’t get messiah to run at all with those drivers, but it works flawlessly with 84.21. I have a different card though, but it couldn’t hurt to try.

#10

hello DaveW,

81.67 is the latest certified driver for Quadro cards
http://www.nvidia.com/page/partner_certified_drivers.html

84.21 is the latest certified driver for GeForce cards
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_84.21.html

or not?

#11

I’d give it a try geco. The driver I’m using currently isn’t SUPPOSE to support my card.

#12

They’re supposed to be unified drivers, meaning they work with any geforce/quadro card. It may not have been certified with the quadro, but it should still work.

Hi!
I use pmgMessiah on nVidia Quadro 4500 ,---->working not so smooth,im not happy!
Maybe because i have WindowsXP64 .?
I use Messiah before on 3DLab’s Wildcat Realizm 200 —>working very GOOD!
To use Messiah with quadro you need make some change’s in Graphic Card setting.
All info you can find in HELP FILE.

#14

Hi Jullia,

So, when you’ve done those driver changes, does it work OK for you or are you still having problems?

#15

Yes after i change setting for Graphic Card ,Open GL work much better. Now i can expand menu and move ,rotate object. But its still not so perfect.
Also object shading seems to me not so good.
On my other workstation with 3DLab’s Graphic Card ,Controls like, Move,Rotate,Drop down menu all this works allot faster smoother.
Remeber you spend $1800 for Graphic card ,You’'ll speed UP modeling time ,but you spend allot more time rigging using Messiah ON QuadroFX4500 just because Open GL PROBLEM.
Its not big problem for me ,i have 2 computers.I do animation on my other mashine.
iTS A SHAME for Messiah to not support best Graphic Cards.

#16

i use it on quaddro 4400 and have no problems.

#17

Stooch,

Are you on XP or XP64?

David

i’ve updated the drivers to 84.21 but nothing is changed…
same display problems with the new messiah 2.4 plus a new and bigger one:
every item in the world view is grayed. :banghead:

worldview messiah 2.2, worldview messiah 2.4

I’m using messiah with Quadro 3400 and it works very good. there is a trick though, I have to set my Application setting to Maya to be able to work with it. anything else and it doesn’t! I didn’t try fiddling with the setting, just choose Maya as the appliaction and everything works great.

Hope that helps

Cheers

you don’t have this display problem?:

which hardware, operating system, graphic card driver are you using?
i’ve tried every preset included maya.
