Vic Monty's speedpaints and other things

Goro said he did 1 30 min speedpaint a day when he started. Well, I can’t gaurantee a 30 min SP a day, but I’ll try. I got my own daily assignments. I visit the 15 min sketchathon at the anatomy thread. Then I visit the Speedpainting thread here. If I’m lucky, I do the DSG. Man I love DSG’s. Peleng is something to aspire to. I don’t have any painting background. I always worked in pencil. I’m finding that I love color and I’m getting to learn photoshop 7 and my intuous 3 quite well. Please be brutally honest. I don’t use custom brushes. Though I hope to collect some or make some to apply to a style I will develop one day. Thanks for visiting.

well even tho it doesnt comeout the way you want it to at the begining to gotta keep on working on it and every bit counts so even if you cant invest alot of time into it then even the little time yull invest at it will make you improve and bit by bit yull become better :slight_smile: everyone started this way and no one picked up a pencill the first time of hes life and drawed perfectly so keep on trying and work on it and at the end (or even sooner :smiley: ) yull get better :smiley:

btw that drawing of the statue the proportions and the angle are close but not accurate.another important thing is to NEVER let youself go on a thing you draw and tackle yourself to figure out where you did it wrong cuz that way yull learn from your mistakes and speed up your improvment cuz if yull draw it the wrong way then the only thing yull learn is how to draw it wrongly :smiley:

I haven’t done DSG’s or anything much lately. I figured I’ll start from the begining. This is still a WIP. I need to work on my highlights and dark areas also. shadows need to be added and more things are needed. or i may just move on from this one…let me know what you think.

Hey Victor, i think you are passionate about digital art but don’t always stay focused on any particular piece. Speed paints are fun but rarely does anything great come from 30 minutes of work. I’m not trying to dissuade you from speed paints but i think it might help you to focus on fundamentals at this point.

For example, that apple you started is a great study to continue with. Its the first piece that you took the time to smoothly blend the gradient on the shadows. Lighting and shadows are fundamental to art…the more you can accurately portray realistic lighting the better your work will be.

Keep going with this apple… build upon the work you’ve done and try to complete a realistic study. Once you have a solid value drawing (greyscale) you can go in and add color later. I wouldn’t even worry about color at this point…value studies are great for learning the digital tools. Get a picture or real apple to study from and really look at it. The ligthing will give it form, along with shadows, highlights, reflected light, texture…this is all part of the apple.

The more patience and applied practice you have…the sooner you will start seeing growth.

Thanks for taking the time look at my art and even more time to post about it. I appreciate your thoughts. I am passionate and I don’t focus on one piece. I started about 3 or 4 pieces in the past before this, but I haven’t finished them yet. I decided to take it back to the begining. Fundamentals! I’m working on the apple slowly. I realize now that I tend to rush to see results. Unfortunately, rushing gives you bad results so I don’t improve. I’m just left with another rushed and unfinished picture. I really feel like this apple is a big step for me. It may seem little to some, but as you already mentioned, I actually started blending on this one. Thanks again for your words of encouragement. I have a long way to go, but now that I’m actually following some kind of study and learning the tools I’m having fun again. Check back in the future.

Practicing still life, like this apple or whatever similarly “simple” is really the way to go. Most of what you need to do was allready written here, just keep your passion and although “it may seem little to some” it really isn’t. There is nothing simple about a cube or complicated about a epic spaceship. Everything is as simple/complicated as much you put into it. You can keep practicing painting apples for 20 years and if you keep learning to paint you probably will be practicing those “simple” still life stuff forever. Don’t rush and decompose the problem into small manageable parts and learn the whole bit by bit - as if you were picking peas with pincers one by one from a deep container. The only thing you need to know - really - is that if you make enough for it, you will achieve whatever you want, nothing as talent is needed.

This is an “apple” thread over on Conceptart.org…but you might find it interesting. There are tons of pages of people painting apples or other still lifes and posting their progress. I think you might find it benefictial for learning about the shadows/highlights/colors and other elements of still life painting. I know you are starting in black/white but the lessons from that link are valuable to all artists.

haven’t done much to it. I had a great weekend though!
I just converted the orginial color pic into a grayscale and I now see that I need more highlight on the left side of the apple(from my view).

This is for Nov’s contest over at ST. I don’t have more wips to post, because I was so nervous about doing this that I dove in and last night I ended up with this…

Next I think I should pull out my lights and darken my darks. Detail the axe a bit and finsh off the forest in the background.

Pleaes let me know how you think I can improve this image. I’ve gone further with this illustration than I have in a long time with my art. Big step for me. Thanks!

I think you’re doing great, just next time try to focus even more to your lighting conditions, where is your main light source and how does it affect each obect in your scene.
Overall looks great!

I was thinking of a fire burning or some kind of source coming from in front of the character from his left side. I tried to keep that in mind. I probably could have mad it a little more dramatic?

The first idea which comes to me to the head, it’s to do your black more black, more contrasted. Why not a kind of chiaroscuro.
