Man I dont know what to say ;). I watched it over and over again! Very high artistic quality in all areas, lighting in particular and colour choices attribute so much character to the overall feel of this piece . 5 * without a doubt . If this is any indication of things to come , you will make a brilliant director , let alone animator.

One can never be too satisfied with the animation… the feel and mood of the piece is potrayed beautifully.The music is perfect too…can never get bored with it…Good stuff Danny .

i liked the mood of the short film and the camera shots were very nicely composed. story was plesent to obsorb , as well i liked your lighting . i would suggest really going in and pushing the movement in the wrist , i just would lke to see the musical vibrance emmited from those hands , any way , good job keep it up
synch of fingers playing on the piano is very nice as weel as overall look of your movie, unfortunetaly i dont buying a story at all, there is no point. But anyhow nice work there.
I really like the modeling/lighting/texturing/overall look of the whole piece. Plus the concept is solid. Some crits though. I thought the begining was too quick. You give us no time to find out who this old man is before he starts pouring all his emotion all over the screen. It makes the emotion seem less important. I also kinda wish there was more build up right before he starts playing. More silence, and maybe some more shots of his face and/or hands to show his thought process and some anticipation before the first note. Overall, this piece reaches its climax before much is really established.
In terms of the animation, it looked good except for some parts where the hands felt very mechanical, like they didn’t have enough anticipation or settle when they moved.
Besides those things, it really is a great piece, a lot of good work in there.

Jacek: Thanks man! I know what you mean. Well, my goal was not to establish a story per say (I do have 3 pages of background on the characer), but to expose the process, the experience itself. The result isn’t as inportant as living the moment. I wanted to bring that to the viewer, so they feel and fill the gaps with they’re own experiences. Plus, I wanted to show some thecnical stuff like lighting, camera work, composition, concepts, modeling, etc.
So yes, there’s no point to the story 
Mike: Thanks a lot man! I’m not going to write a lot here (again :)), just want to say that I totaly agree with all you’ve said. Those were points I fought with during all stages, but I had to compromise to get other parts working. I’m really glad that you liked especially the modeling, lighting, texturing, overall look and concept, because those where the points I really wanted to get good and show as the Reel side of things. Thanks again, and I saw your piece, very solid and entertaining. Really good!

Really nice mood here, a very smart way of using colors, framing, and music to establish overall feeling and atmosphere. Good job~ I wish to see more of that guy’s face expression and may be as Dr.Trent said, give it a little bit more time for audience to get in the mood before he is playing the piano.

Very original? Daniel its technically very good, a lot better looking than my own no doubt, but I can’t help feeling you just ripped off my film! Even in terms of camera angles and design of the old man and the empty environment, and the general concept. Never hurts to mention other artists when you’re borderline copying. I wouldnt have minded, honestly. Type 1 word, ‘piano’ into google…

Hi AidanGibbons, I cant help but reply to your comment, I was the one who introduced your film to danny for the first time, but i have to let you know that he never knew your short film until i showed him, which was around the third (final) term within our course, his film was well underway, and most of the shots are already prepared, he even said that he was surprised to see your short and as i recall,refused to watch it the second time since he does not want to be influenced by your film. I hope this clears up some misunderstanding, and Daniel, please tell me if you do not wish for me to post this comment as i will edit it.

Aidan: Thanks for the complement man. Now, I’m really sorry you feel that way, but Dewi’s right. I did watch your film, but it was well into production, and all my concepts were locked, modeled, and into animation. I was surprised indeed, but after watching it I didn’t feel like they were the same. They are both about an old guy who plays the piano, there is the empty space sure, but those things are general. I think we both used things that were common and made two pieces that stant appart. I don’t think visually they are the same, nor that yours is in any way inferior.
I have all my design and story choices well grounded, and quite a few references, and all that in pre-production, well before I saw your piece.
Now, I don’t mean to convince you, nor to turn this into a great debate. I really do feel sorry you felt ripped off and wish you didn’t, you sound like a nice guy and your film is great and stands alone. I just thought I should express my position.

I know how you feel AidanGibbons. I had the similar situation too. I was in term 4 when the Ratatouille Trailer came out. My 3D animatic was finished. I was quite depressed at the time because apparently my story is also about a rat and a human. I even wanted to completely change my story at one point, good thing that my instructors encouraged me to keep doing what I was doing. Some of my friends who first saw it would ask me what if people think I copy it, but I don’t think that matters anymore. I learnt a lot from making this reel, that is what matters.
I am sure what Ville says is true. I don’t think anyone would want their reel to resemble anyone else’s.
