vector displacement or magic?

#1

ok, seriously… somebody has to show me this cuz it sounds like complete bs by someone who doesn’t understand how the technology actually works:

http://www.luxology.com/whatismodo/sculpt.aspx

"True Displacement
modo can work with a true vector displacement—not just height fields. This means you can store objects like a mushroom in a vector displacement map. You can even turn 3D geometry into a brush and sculpt using ears (or mushrooms).
"

so this guy is saying that you can drop a vector image onto a flat, highly subdivided plane and get a mushroom?

SHOW ME!

nevermind, found it.

holy crap, that’s really fing amazing. but i get the tech now… it’s also figuring out the difference between the two different mesh features and relating it back to identical uv maps (which seems to be the magic part).

good stuff and very very cool.

It might have been easier to find out more if you went to the modo site since they have been demoing the results for the past 6 months instead of digging through other application’s websites.

actually it was much easier just typing “vector displacement map” into google and going with their first result.

Lol, Ironic quote?

Vector maps have been around for some time Lightwave/XSI both have support for them,
Terragen2 supports cliffs and overhangs via the same method as do other terrain programs like Geocontrol2 and i think even Mojoworld.

It means Modo now has no problems making caves or nostrils etc via vectormaps, which for a long time has been hard to do, but the tech itself has been done at siggraph since 1995, and just about every year since.

yeah… typed too soon… shoulda googled first.

it’s just that for a very long time, i’ve been hearing people say that you can describe undercuts with normal maps and i thought it was another one of those…

my mistake. mea culpa.
