v10 smartskin

I’m having trouble grasping how to make smartskins (at all)
in v10- does anyone have any good resources/links?

While you can still just rightclick a bone and choose>new>smartskin and open a relationship window, I have started just using an action to test my models movements, adding smartskin keyframes where necessary.
It is easy: When you are posing your model and reach a position that needs some smartskin, just right click the bone driving the problem area>new>smartskin you will immediately enter muscle mode and you will see that the relationship toggle is active. adjust the cps that you need to, and then un-toggle the relationship icon. You are now still in your action and can continue posing your model around.
The smartskin adjustments are stored under bone relationships, and A:M will interpolate between them as you pose your model in the future, they will stay with your model. If you clear the test action that you were using to make them, you will find that the smartskin adjustments will stay with the bone, next time you pose the model! It’s great, you can add smartskin adjustments in this way at any time in any action or choreography and all of the little tweaks that you make become part of the model (You can delete them also–they are in the relationships folder).
Hope this is helpful.

thanks for your comments- another question: when creating smartskins (in a smartskin/relationship window, should I be moving bones at all, or just control points?

#4

If you are using my method, then only CPs.
In a regular smartskin window, both.

Keep in mind that a smartskin can drive things other than cp positions now, so don’t move anything that you don’t want to be a part of the relationship!

As usual, very helpful William. Sometimes it amazes me how simple these things are, but without documentation it makes you feel like a fool.

Thanks again.

Wait. The documentation for the latest versions is this bad now!?!?

-sigh- ah the blissful ignorance from being kneck deep into using 8.5 for an entirely too large project and being to afraid to look up.

I’m using it, and it works, and life is good!!!

Thanks William!

I’m working through trying to set up some smartskin and I’m a bit confused.

This is probably a very basic step, but I want to make sure I have grasp on the process:

When I get the relationships editing window open do I need to start with the bone in question in the default position and then move it into the second position and move the control points? I tried setting up smartskin with the bone already moved and it changed the positioning of the control points at the default position as well.

I’m still having trouble with smartskin in V10… I have an action window open, move a bone, click on the bone in order to select ‘new>smartskin’… the relationships icon highlights and I move control points around. Once I’m done I turn of the relationships button.

When I move the bone around, all the moved control points now stay in the new smartskin postion. They don’t blend back to the original position when the bone is back in it’s neutral/original position. The control points move, but they move in a group “locked” in the smartskin position.

Any help? I’ll post images later when I have a chance.

hmmm. I’m not sure what might be happening… I know that when you toggle the relationship off, you are still in muscle mode, but you had to have switced back to action mode in order to move the bone again… I usually also save before going any further also, but I don’t know if that would matter…

When you post your pictures, I will look at it and see if I can figure out what’s happening:shrug:
