UV Unwrapping help - please

#1

Ok, I realy need to get a map onto an object (it is for a comission). I have searched all I can for tutorials and read the manuel but I can’t for the life of me work out how to do UV mapping in Wings.

I can import images and make groups and textures but I cannot find any reference to UV mapping in the interface. I cannot get to the segmenting mode that is mentioned in the manual.

I am using version 0.98.19b. Does UV mapping in this version work differently? or not at all?

Heres an example to UV mapping a cube :

Add a cube, go into body selection mode. Then click Uv Mapping.

Right, now you’ll get a new window, the UV mapper tool. You could right click somewhere in the scene of that window, and click segment by>Projection/Feature detection. I prefer segmenting stuff by projection (gives better maps  ), although feature detection does give better maps in different geometry’s. Or you could map it customly.

To map it customly, just select a face, right click, and choose a UV chart. If you put a different chart for each face, each face will be a seperate map. (its like cutting the maps into smaller pieces.)

When your done, right click, click continue, choose either projection or unfolding. It gives you a different pattern of maps (if i’m not mistaken) i usually use projection.

Now you’ll see your charts in a new screen. Click the “x” at the top, and it will prompt you if you want to save it. Click yes.

Now in the outliner window, your Diffuse map will appear. Its the chart! Right click on it, and click export. Now edit it in a image editor. (Paint some lines or something more usefull  ) Now save your edited image somewhere, and open wings (if you closed it ). Click import image. And select the edited image.

Now your edited image appears in the outliner window! In body selection mode, click the cube, and go into UV mapping mode. Since you saved it before, it will prompt you if you would like to discard the old maps or edit it, click edit. And now you’ll see the charts. In the outliner window, click on your edited version of the charts, and drag it into the UV map window. And Voila! Its done!

Hope this helped:)

Hey thanks Admiral Ra

I think that you have given me enough to get going now  The link to that tutorial didn’t work for me (just got a Yahoo page saying that it was not found), but I think that I could work out the rest from here.

I’m off to get stuck into it…

You should use 19c instead of 19b since 19b got some autoUV issues.

I posted some stuff related to autoUV some time ago on another forum, might be of interest to you:

Thanks for the tip.

The web space says that 19b is the last stable release. Does this mean that 19c isn’t stable?

Hi John, seeing as Wings exports .obj files, you could always use UVMapper Classic for your unwraps. It’s not necessarily better or easier than using the built in UV but you might find it more intuitive. Then again , you might not. Just another option.

Thanks SpeccySteve,

Actually, I have been using UVmapper. It has done the job pretty well but I don’t like the way that moving polys disconnects them. There is also no zoom (that I can find) so things can get a bit fiddly.

I have been having some sucess with the wings UV system so I think I might use that.

I have some questions about wings though:

  1. Is it possible to change the projection direction (at the moment the UV map looks from the side)

  2. Is it possible to mix projection with unfolding?

Thanks for help, relly usefull, deadline coming up:hmm:

Actually, scrub 1. I think I worked that out.
