UV troubles, Distorted images

#1

Hey everyone,

I’ve been using lightwave for about 4years now but have managed not to poperly learn to UV map a model. I have tended to just use basic image mapping and do the rest using lightwave procedurals and shaders.

However, doing some modelling for computer games so gotta get it sussed.

I understand how to do it but i keep running in to this same problem and i have not got a clue what i’m doing wrong. Its probably a total n00b thing im doing wrong, but Here goes…

I modelled a LCD monitor.
Made my UVs and layed them out.
Exported an EPS to use in photoshop as a reference.
Created my texture image.
Saved the image as .jpeg (i have tried other formats too)

However this is where it goes a little odd.
When I try to load my image into lightwave’s image editor its all stretch and distorted.
Any other image i use works fine, except ones ive created using an EPS as a referance. I’ve even tried loading the jpeg back into PS and saving it out again as a diffirent file but the same thing happens again.

bellow is an image of a textue i made to try it and how its showing up in image editor and other parts of modeler

the saved jpeg image (for some reason i cant embed this imgage:P)

how it shows up

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys

i’m pretty sure that’s because that image is in cmyk color mode. change it to rgb and it will be fine.

Aw fantastic!

That’s exactly wat it was. I’m such a n00b at textuing :stuck_out_tongue:

I cant believe I never thought of that.

Thanks Zardoz

Unless you’re specifically working for print I would avoid ever working with CMYK. Even if you’re producing images that will eventually be sent for print it is often better to keep things RGB and let the printer be in charge of the CMYK conversion. I’ve only ever had one job that required working with CMYK and it was producing pages for a newspaper/magazine publisher, nothing since has ever required it & I doubt that most people will ever need it.

Yea I normally only use RGB. I use it by default.

It seems a bit strange that lightwave would export UVs in a fomat it couldnt read. It neve even occoured to me to check.

It doesn’t.

It exports to .eps which is a vector format. When it is imported into Photoshop (which I assume you were using?) it opens a dialogue box with the resolution and colour options. If the box said grayscale and 256x256, that’s how the .eps would be imported. The values in that box are from the last vector file that you imported and you need to change the values to suit your image, for example: RGB, 1024px X 1024px

Ah I see.

Well atleast thats that sorted now.

Thanks for your help guys.
